The classroom environment we created was such a positive experience that students posted to social media how much they love their classmates. I began taking photos and video of our learning in action because it looked very different from what most of us experienced in school. To build trust for this new approach, I wanted our families and the community to see the effect it was having on students. What I wasn't expecting was the way this media shaped our own perceptions of our work. Students liked seeing and hearing themselves making positive, intelligent contributions to our community. They strived continuously to elevate their performance to match the way they saw themselves as reflected by the media we shared.
