Maiko appears cold and seductive on the surface, but it's an act; she actually tends to be playful, teasing people constantly. She is fond of life on Tyria, hence her desire to remain in the realm. She is also extremely protective of her best friend, Basil.

Maiko appears as a tall, pale woman with large breasts and curvy proportions. Her eyes are red as rubies, with hair as black as raven feathers. She often appears with red horns sticking up out of her forehead, with bat-like, demonic wings coming out of her back. For clothing, she prefers wearing red and black.

In reality, Maiko is a Kryptis hiding behind a human illusion.

Similarly to Basil, Maiko is linked by a thread of fate to a being from another universe.

Maiko Takumi is a demon, but not one in the sense that is known to the average Tyrian. Rather, she is a mist entity known as a Kryptis, one who belongs to House Aurkus. In the year 1048 A.E., Maiko, then known as Kallisto, arrived from Nayos along with Kanaxai's Nightmare Horde at a location called Cantha. The demonic horde was dubbed the "Oni" by the Kurzicks and the Luxons.

Kallisto became enamored by the people of Tyria and their rich emotions, especially those states of mind associated with lust and arousal. As a result, she broke away from Kanaxai's horde and fled. She cast an illusion on herself to make herself appear more human and changed her name to that of an ancient hero named Maiko Takumi, letting her live among the Kurzicks. But she could not escape her true nature, and so she passed herself off as some kind of prostitute, allowing her to feed on emotions of lust.

In 1127 A.E., Emperor Usoku united the Kurzicks and the Luxons. After this happened, someone saw through Maiko's illusion and reported her to Ministry of Purity, an organization responsible for Cantha's ongoing effort to purge non-humans from their borders. Maiko managed to escape, fleeing for the continent of Tyria where she stayed until the path to Cantha reopened following the pact Commander's triumph over the Dragonvoid in 1335 AE (1845 CC in the Canthan Calendar).

Today, Maiko lives happily in Cantha once again, and enjoys frequent trips to Tyria to meet friends that she made there, such as Basil.
