UPJ visual communication students visit Flight 93 National Memorial to learn now visual design can powerfully communicate memory, heroism, and national significance.
Students studying Visual Communication at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown recently visited the Flight 93 National Memorial to explore the power of design and symbolism in storytelling. Led by Dr. Diane Nicodemus, students used a semiotic approach to analyze the architectural elements of the memorial, uncovering how visual features convey the story of Flight 93 and its heroic passengers during the tragic events of 9/11.
During the visit, students also had the opportunity to hear from Courtney Claycomb, a former Humanities major at UPJ and now the Communication and Special Events Coordinator for Friends of Flight 93. Claycomb gave a presentation about her role at the memorial and discussed her work on the memorial’s outreach efforts, including the educational poster displayed behind the students in the group photo.
The trip provided students with a meaningful, real-world application of their coursework, showing how visual design can powerfully communicate memory, heroism, and national significance.
