The start of the academic year is marked by a vibrant slate of events designed to welcome new and returning students to campus, build community, and create a strong sense of belonging. Under the Weeks of Welcome umbrella, the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown hosts a series of high-energy programs that connect students to campus resources, promote academic success, and encourage engagement in campus life.
We began with New Student and Transfer Orientation, a peer-led, immersive program that introduces students to the physical campus, academic expectations, and available resources, while fostering connections among peers, faculty, and staff. Students participated in a series of peer-led workshops from 40 volunteer orientation leaders that focused on these topics while also hearing messages regarding community, consent, anti-hazing and active bystander intervention messaging, and how to get ‘comfortable with the uncomfortable’ with social media star, Harlan Cohen. We also participated in Convocation, had the annual First Year Games/Mountain Cat Cup where Oak Hall dominated, and utilized our new platform, Experience Pitt to manage the entire program.
Following NSTO, the Weeks of Welcome calendar featured a dynamic mix of social, educational, and recreational programs that span the first two weeks of the semester. Highlights include:
Campus Traditions and Spirit Events – Pep rallies, welcome back celebrations, and athletic events to build school pride.
Student Organization Showcases and Signature Welcome Events – Fairs and tabling events connecting students to clubs, organizations, and leadership opportunities. We had nearly 500 students participate in the 9/3 Student Involvement Fair.
Community-Building Activities – Outdoor socials, late-night events, and themed gatherings to help students form lasting friendships.
Wellness and Resource Programs – Workshops and outreach efforts focusing on mental health, academic success, and personal well-being.
Weeks of Welcome reflect the University’s commitment to student engagement and retention, encouraging students to get involved early and often. By offering a diverse and inclusive lineup of events, these events help every student feel at home, supported, and ready to thrive in their Pitt-Johnstown journey.
