On 19 April 1916, he was reported missing; it was later confirmed that had been taken Prisoner of War and imprisoned at Giessen, Hesse, Germany.
On 25 Nov 1918, now released, he was ‘at rest’ at Camp Dover. He became ill with ‘Influenza’ and was admitted to the Military Hospital in Parkhurst, on the Isle of Wight, for treatment. Recovered, he was repatriated to Canada.

Le 25 novembre 1918, il est libéré, il est « au repos » au camp de Douvres. Il est tombé malade de la « grippe » et a été admis à l'hôpital militaire de Parkhurst, sur l'île de Wight, pour y être soigné. Guéri, il est rapatrié au Canada.

Harry's brother James F. Royle (Fred), was also a bugler for the 29th, and was taken prisoner of war.
