Leisure Village

History

The origins of the Leisure Village Racquet Club are lost in the mists of time (or possibly June gloom). Some say LVRC's history dates back to when the Chumash Indians used wooden sticks to hit mossy stones at each other on the Oxnard plain, eventually leading to the adoption of the fuzzy green ball still used in tennis and paddle tennis today.  Reputable scholars believe it's somewhat more likely that the LV Racquet Club dates back to the equally odd and exotic time known as the mid-1970s, when Leisure Village was developed.  It is believed in some quarters that in the early days, Racquet Club members played in bell-bottom jeans, Nehru jackets and pastel-colored leisure suits, all while wielding wooden racquets, sporting Bjorn Borg-style headbands and throwing Jimmy Connors-style tantrums.   It is reported in these same quarters that, after matches, club members would retire to the disco to “boogie down” or “do the Hustle,” thereby establishing the traditions of active fellowship and fun carried on by the current membership as we “Keep on Truckin” into the future.
