Modelling of Disc Fragmentation, Planet Migration and Episodic Accretion

at University of Leicester

The workshop is focused on numerical modelling of clump evolution in massive self-gravitating discs.

What is common between planet formation, stellar binary formation, episodic outbursts of young low mass and massive stars, massive stars in AGN discs, and mergers of supermassive BHs with stellar mass BHs? All these phenomena involve, or may involve, evolution of an object embedded in and interacting with a massive self-gravitating disc. At the present, there is no robust and general numerical approach to model such systems. Ideally one needs to simulate the disc in 3D, but the internal structure of the clump/planet is best modelled with a 1D implicit scheme due to numerical limitations. This however has not yet been implemented, and the most common approach in the literature is the concept of the sink particle, which is a toy model to say the least. During the workshop, we would like to discuss the latest results in this area, and/or ideas on how to move on from the sink particle approach to a more physically robust and numerically sound scheme for modelling objects embedded in massive gaseous discs.
