About Me

Lei Wang earned his B.Eng and M.Eng degrees from Southeast University, China, in 1996 and 1999, respectively, followed by a Ph.D. from the School of EEE at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, in 2004. He served as a research associate and research fellow at Nanyang Technological University from 2003 to 2005. Subsequently, he transitioned to the Department of Information Engineering, RSISE, at The Australian National University, where he worked as a postdoctoral researcher. In January 2007, Lei Wang was honoured with the Australian Postdoctoral Fellowship by the Australian Research Council, undertaking the role of APD research fellow from 2007 to 2009. In May 2009, he received the Early Career Researcher Award from the Australian Academy of Science and the Australian Research Council. In April 2011, he joined the School of Computing and Information Technology at the University of Wollongong. Presently, he serves as a professor and leads the VILA group (Visual Information Learning and Analysis).

His research spans the domains of computer vision, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. Within computer vision, he is currently focused on exploring the intersection of vision and language, conducting medical image analysis, and refining techniques for image retrieval. In the realms of machine learning and artificial intelligence, his attention is directed towards continual learning, reinforcement learning, and their practical applications in robotics. Additionally, he maintains a broad interest in various topics within pattern recognition and data analysis.
