Yes, we have a Privacy Policy too. Not because we love legal text—but because we rely on external services to bring Legaly to life. These include OpenAI and Firebase, which help us analyze content and manage system limits.
Don’t worry—we apply the same standards of clarity and transparency that Legaly provides. In fact, you can even run this policy through Legaly for a quick summary 😉
Legaly is a Chrome extension developed by Paolo Ronco. Its purpose is to help users understand complex legal documents such as Terms of Service and Privacy Policies through AI-generated summaries.
Legaly helps you analyze legal documents in real time. When you click the “Analyze” button:
It reads the current webpage content (only when triggered by you)
Extracts visible text, usually from a legal page
Sends that text to a secure backend
The backend forwards it to the OpenAI API
OpenAI generates a simplified summary
The summary is returned to your browser and displayed
No monitoring. No background tracking. No storage of personal information.
We designed Legaly with privacy-first principles. This means:
We do NOT collect or store:
Your name or email
Your browsing history
Cookies or session data
Login credentials or form inputs
Device information or IP address
The only data temporarily handled is the text of the legal page you're analyzing. This data is:
Used only during the session
Sent securely
Never stored long-term
Not linked to your identity
We use OpenAI to perform the actual summarization.
When you click “Analyze”, we securely transmit the extracted text to OpenAI’s servers via API.
OpenAI processes the text and returns a response.
According to OpenAI's usage policy, your data is not used to train their models.
We do not send any personal user information—only the content of the page being analyzed.
This data is ephemeral, stateless, and handled exclusively for generating summaries.
Firebase is used for two strictly technical purposes:
We use Firebase Cloud Functions to track how many analyses are requested per user/session.
This helps prevent abuse and overuse of OpenAI API calls.
A lightweight, anonymous session ID is generated but not linked to your identity or device.
We log how often the extension is used (e.g., total daily requests).
We do not track specific users or gather analytics like page visits, time on site, or clicks.
All analytics data is non-identifiable and used only to improve infrastructure and reliability.
We do not use Firebase for authentication, ad targeting, or real-time databases.
To function properly, Legaly requests the following Chrome permissions:
Allows Legaly to access the content of the currently open tab—but only when you click on the extension icon.
This does not give us access to background tabs or any non-visible data.
Allows us to inject a script that extracts the visible text from the page.
This script runs on demand and is not persistent.
Used to store non-personal preferences like language selection or session count.
All storage is local and stays in your browser.
Important: Legaly does not run in the background, does not inject on all sites, and does not communicate silently with any servers.
Legaly operates without traditional analytics tools like Google Analytics or Mixpanel.
Instead:
We log only total request counts (e.g., 1,000 analyses today)
We do not log individual behaviors, session durations, or device information
No cookies or fingerprinting are used
You remain entirely anonymous while using the extension.
All communication between your browser and our backend is encrypted with HTTPS.
Our backend is hosted via Google Cloud Functions.
We do not run persistent databases or store any logs related to your activity.
We do not share your data with any third parties for marketing or profiling.
The only third-party services involved are:
OpenAI, for processing content (see Section 4)
Firebase, for system stability (see Section 5)
Both platforms comply with GDPR and offer enterprise-level privacy safeguards.
We may update this Privacy Policy in the future. If we make significant changes, we’ll notify users via the extension interface or the official project site.
Version and date will always be clearly marked.
