Our Work
Our past (and in some cases ongoing) projects include:
Rotating flags outside the building that show our school's support of our diverse community
Acquiring additional diverse and inclusive books for the Leeds library and classroom libraries
Fundraising to supply classrooms with early-reader books that align with current reading curriculum and are particularly inclusive in the characters they feature
Displaying books and messages in the school lobby that support and celebrate inclusion and diversity
Providing art/posters for school walls that honor our inclusive values and the diversity of our school community and world
Organizing “Let’s Talk” parent/caregiver discussions of media and ideas on topics pertaining to inclusion and equity
Running "From the Leeds Equity & Inclusion Committee" in The Buzz at Leeds, where we highlight articles, books, videos, upcoming events, and other resources pertaining to equity and inclusion
Hosting the World Café event, dedicated to celebrating and learning about the world's countries and cultures, and building community among Leeds students and families
Updating the school's event/activity checklist to help Leeds adults plan events with an eye to inclusion
Additional ideas for this year and beyond include:
Hosting facilitated conversation groups on topics that can be challenging for adults to address with kids (e.g., race, class, disability, gender identity)
Leading Social Justice Club LEAP offering for students
Coordinating school-wide classroom reading project/s on a particular theme (volunteers from families and community reading in classrooms)
Aligning with local advocacy efforts around issues that affect our school community
Providing classrooms teachers with additional books and display materials that support diversity and inclusion
Planting trees on school grounds
Running donation drives and related efforts to welcome newly immigrated families to the area
Providing support for hiring and retaining educators of color
...and more!
