Once you have a learner permit, you must have supervised driving practice and take a pre-licensing course or a driver education course before taking your road test. Be sure to follow restrictions on where and when you can drive.

If you pass your test, an interim license that allows you to drive will be available online. Keep the interim license with your photo learner permit until your new license arrives in the mail (in about 2 weeks).

For a Class D, Class DJ, and Class E driver license, the expiration date of your learner permit becomes the expiration date of your driver license. The learner permit and the driver license are valid for a maximum of 5 years. When you apply for a learner permit and a driver license, you pay the fee for the length of time that the documents are valid.

Starting July 1, 2023 eligible residents in Massachusetts can obtain a Standard (Class D or M) driver's license, regardless of immigration status, under the Work and Family Mobility Act. For more information, visit www.mass.gov/wfma.

Learner's permit exams are currently available online. Topics covered on the exam include alcohol misuse, suspensions, and JOL violations, as well as rules of the road and identifying road signs. To pass the exam, you must answer 18 questions correctly within the allotted time of 25 minutes. Once the exam is started, you may not pause. To prepare for the exam, study the Class D driver's manual.

If you are under 18 years of age, you must obtain the written consent of a parent, legal guardian, Department of Children and Families, or boarding school headmaster. Written consent must be given by signing the Driver's License, Learner's Permit, or ID Card application. If the person giving consent is NOT a parent, proper documentation of authority must be shown at the time of the permit test. You will also be subject to certain restrictions until you turn 18.

The procedures for obtaining a driver license for those under the age of 18 are covered in Section A-3 of the Comprehensive Driver Manual. Review Section A-3 of the Comprehensive Driver Manual for additional information on the Graduated Driver License Program.

A learner permit only authorizes a person to operate a motor vehicle whenever the permit holder is accompanied by a person who is at least 21-years-of-age and has a valid driver license. T.C.A.  55-50-311.

EXCEPTION: If you are at least 17  years old, you may obtain an instruction permit without completing driver education or driver training. However, to get a DL, you must provide proof that you have completed driver education and driver training or wait until you are 18 years old.

It is against the law for drivers under 18 years old to use a cellphone or other wireless electronic communication device while driving, including a hands-free device, unless making a call for emergency services or on private property.

The driving test of a holder of an out-of-state DL is normally waived. However, DMV may require a driving test for any type of DL application. A minor who surrenders an out-of-state DL to apply for an original California DL, is subject to all restrictions/ requirements per California law. Proof of driver education and driver training may be required.

Please review the steps and options for getting a learner permit below. You can make an appointment to get your learner permit at a DOL office near you and review the list of approved documents to bring to your appointment.

Washington (WA) permits, ID cards, and licenses use a number that starts with WDL or the first five letters of your last name. This number identifies you and is unique. You'll use it to make an appointment to go to one of our offices. Your WDL number also allows your driver training school to inform us you're enrolled in an approved course (required if you want to get your permit between ages 15 and 15 and a half).

You must complete an approved driver training course if you want to get your driver license before you turn 18. You'll need to give your WDL number to your driving school. You can visit an office or complete your online application for a permit ten days before the course starts (including weekends and holidays). This will allow your driver training school to inform us that you're enrolled.

If you are under the age of 16 using parent taught driver education as your eligibility to test, you MUST have the Parent-Taught Affidavit approval number and proof of purchase of the Parent Taught Program provider.

Parent Taught Driver Education is the newest of three forms of driver education in Oklahoma. If your public school does not offer Driver Education, if you do not attend a public school, or if there are no commercial driving schools in your area, Parent Taught Driver Education may be right for you.

Service Oklahoma does not accept any driving logs. Please refer to the requirements of your parent-taught provider within the course. Service Oklahoma will require the parent to verify that the permit holder has completed fifty (50) hours of driving including a minimum of ten (10) hours of driving at night from a licensed driver through the Affidavit of Driver Training form.

You must obtain a learner's permit before you operate a motor vehicle in Pennsylvania. You will need to take and pass the Vision, Knowledge and Road tests to get your driver's license. The Non-Commercial Learner's Permit Application (DL-180) (PDF) is valid for one year from the date of your physical examination; however, the physical examination date may not be more than six months prior to your 16th birthday.

If the driver license examiner cannot determine whether the information on the Non-Commercial Learner's Permit Application or DL-180 (PDF) meets medical standards, your learner's permit may be delayed. You may be required to undergo additional medical examinations. If you have a condition that seriously impairs your ability to drive, you may be required to get a dual-control learner's permit and learn to drive with a certified instructor.

If the parent, guardian, person in loco parentis, or spouse who is 18 years of age or older cannot accompany the applicant, the  DL-180TD (PDF) must be signed by the parent, guardian, person in loco parentis, or spouse who is 18 years of age or older in the presence of a notary.

If you do not have your vision tested by your HCP or optometrist, your vision will be tested at the Driver License Center. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, please bring them with you. You will then take the Knowledge Test on signs, laws, driving rules and safe practices described later in this manual. After passing the Knowledge Test, the examiner will give you a learner's permit, which is valid for one year.

When you receive your learner's permit, you may begin to practice driving. PennDOT recommends young drivers schedule their road test at this time as long as the testing date is not before the eligibility date printed on your learner's permit.

If you are under the age of 18, you are required to complete at least 65 hours of behind-the-wheel skill-building, including no less than 10 hours of nighttime driving and five hours of bad weather driving before taking your Road Test. This training will help teach you the skills necessary to become a good, safe driver.

REMEMBER: A licensed driver who is at least 21 years of age or a parent, guardian, person in loco parentis, or spouse who is 18 years of age or older and holds a driver's license must ride with you in the front seat of your vehicle at all times. In addition, drivers under the age of 18 cannot have more passengers in the vehicle than the number of seat belts.

After you have waited the mandatory six months from your permit issue date and have a signed certificate of completion for the 65 hours of skill-building including no less than 10 hours of nighttime driving and five hours of bad weather driving, you may take your Road Test. If your learner's permit expires or if you do not pass your road test after three tries, you may obtain a Non-Commercial Learner's Permit Application toAdd/Extend/Replace/Change/Correct (DL-31) (PDF).

If you are using your learner's permit for driving outside the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, please check with your insurance company and the other state's Department of Transportation to make sure your learner's permit is considered valid.

Each time you renew your Pennsylvania driver's license, you will be asked if you want the "ORGAN DONOR" designation on your driver's license. Please decide before going to the Photo License Center. The words "ORGAN DONOR" will appear on your driver's license when you say "Yes" to being designated as an organ donor at the Photo License Center.

Applicants under 18 years of age may request and obtain the organ donor designation on their driver's license; however, they must have written consent from a parent, guardian, person in loco parentis, or spouse who is 18 years of age or older. They may give consent by checking the appropriate block on the Parent or Guardian Consent Form or DL-180TD (PDF). For information on organ and tissue donation, visit the DonateLife PA website. ff782bc1db
