People come to us because they want to Learn to Surf Barbados the right way — not rushed, not packaged, and not taught by someone reading from a script. We’ve been part of the Barbados surf scene since 1995, long before surfing here became something you booked online. Back then, it was about showing up early, reading the ocean, and earning your waves. That mindset still guides everything we do today.
Surf in Barbados is a family-run surf school, built and operated by local Bajan surfers who grew up in these waters. Teaching surfing isn’t a side business for us — it’s our life’s work, and that shows the moment you paddle out with us.
Barbados isn’t just a holiday island with waves — it’s one of the most consistent and varied surf destinations in the Caribbean. That’s why so many people choose to Learn to Surf Barbados instead of struggling in colder, unpredictable conditions elsewhere. We have beaches that are forgiving for first-timers and reefs that challenge experienced surfers, often on the same day.
Because we live here and surf year-round, we don’t guess where to teach. We choose locations based on conditions, swell direction, wind, and your ability, not convenience. That local judgment is something you simply can’t replace.
Between us, we bring over 40 years of hands-on surfing experience. Surf in Barbados was founded by Russell Garrett, a competitive surfer, coach, and lifelong waterman who has instructed surfing, windsurfing, and waterskiing for decades. He later teamed up with Matthew Kydd, a two-time Barbados National Surf Champion, whose competitive background shapes how we teach technique and control.
When students come to Learn to Surf Barbados, they’re learning from surfers who have competed, coached, and spent their lives reading waves — not instructors who learned last season.
Our teaching approach has stayed the same since the day we opened: safety first, progress second, fun always. Surfing is not something you rush. Before anyone stands up, we make sure they understand where to sit, when to paddle, and why waves behave the way they do.
When you Learn to Surf Barbados with us, you’re not just learning how to stand on a board — you’re learning how to move comfortably in the ocean. That confidence is what keeps people surfing long after their holiday ends.
We work with complete beginners who have never touched a surfboard, as well as intermediate and advanced surfers looking to sharpen their skills. Some students want a relaxed introduction to surfing. Others arrive with specific goals — longer rides, better turns, or competition preparation.
No matter your level, we teach in a way that feels personal, unpressured, and supportive. Our instructors are known for being patient and easy to learn from, which matters more than anything when you’re new to the water.
Many of our students choose private surf lessons, especially when time is limited or confidence is low. Private coaching allows us to slow things down or speed them up, depending on what you need that day.
If your aim is to Learn to Surf Barbados efficiently, private lessons give you the space to ask questions, reset after mistakes, and progress without distractions. It’s one of the best ways to build real confidence in the water.
One reason people progress faster with us is simple — we put them on the right board. Our surf school offers over 200 surfboards for rent, from 5’5” to 11ft, covering everything from soft tops to performance boards.
We’ve watched too many people struggle on the wrong equipment. When you Learn to Surf Barbados, the board should work with you, not against you. Because we stock such a wide range, we can adjust your board as you improve — sometimes even within the same week.
Surf in Barbados is also a fully equipped surf shop. We stock leashes, fins, wax, rashguards, reef boots, board bags, traction pads, and more. We carry trusted surf brands alongside our own Surf in Barbados apparel, and we run an in-house surfboard repair shop to keep boards in top condition.
For visitors who want everything handled in one place, this makes learning simpler and more relaxed.
We’ve been here for more than 20 years, and our continued presence says more than any marketing claim ever could. Our clients recommend us because we’re honest, experienced, and deeply committed to what we do.
If you’re ready to Learn to Surf Barbados with instructors who care about your safety, your progress, and your experience in the water, we’d be happy to share the waves with you — the same way we’ve been doing since 1995.
