A survey and questions are developed to quantitatively measure student awareness of the existing life-skills programs identified in the Fall 2018 as well as to gauge student experiences in developing life skills at Columbia.

Following the expansion of dedicated staff support for student wellness for Columbia College and Columbia Engineering undergraduates, the School of General Studies creates a new associate dean of wellness position, which will offer additional support to students on medical leave and during the readmission process.

The Learn Well modules will help learners understand how to thrive in Sheridan's learning environment. Upon completion, learners will receive a Learn Well Certificate of Completion. The three modules are:

Locate the "just in time" components of the module content. For example, the module on assessments in online environments could be released alongside the assignments in your course and paired thoughtfully to intentionally support the learning process and assignment completion.

The study, published Sept. 4 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, shows that, though students felt as if they learned more through traditional lectures, they actually learned more when taking part in classrooms that employed so-called active-learning strategies.

Lead author Louis Deslauriers, the director of science teaching and learning and senior physics preceptor, knew that students would learn more from active learning. He published a key study in Science in 2011 that showed just that. But many students and faculty remained hesitant to switch to it.

For the first 11 weeks of the 15-week class, students were taught using standard methods by an experienced instructor. In the 12th week, half the class was randomly assigned to a classroom that used active learning, while the other half attended highly polished lectures. In a subsequent class, the two groups were reversed. Notably, both groups used identical class content and only active engagement with the material was toggled on and off.

Leading research demonstrates that the way our buildings are designed, constructed and maintained has a profound impact on how we live. When we design our buildings, we define how we sleep, what we eat and how we feel throughout the day. ASID is dedicated to leading the conversation on integrating health and wellness in the built environment.

The WELL AP Exam Prep Courses will be led by leaders in human health and wellness in the built environment. This select group of ASID members bring a unique perspective and can clearly illustrate the role of the design community in implementing the WELL Building Standard.

An advocate of progress in design and ongoing education, Sandy has recently earned a graduate degree in Sustainable Retail Environments from the University of Wisconsin Madison while teaching courses in design at the UW. She is recognized as a leader among her peers, regularly presenting to professional and consumer groups on topics such as Aging In Place and Sustainable Design. She is also a fellow of the American Society of Interior Designers and served as a member of the Society's Board of Directors in 2010-2012. Sandy is continually learning and growing to keep pace with the ever-changing landscape of design in order to bring clients the very best in design.

Led by the International WELL Building Institute, WELL is the first building standard to focus exclusively on the health and wellness of the people in buildings. It takes a holistic approach to health in buildings and communities - addressing behavior, operations, and design. The WELL Building Standard focuses on seven concepts: air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort, and mind.

Mental health is a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their community. It is an integral component of health and well-being that underpins our individual and collective abilities to make decisions, build relationships and shape the world we live in. Mental health is a basic human right. And it is crucial to personal, community and socio-economic development.

Mental health conditions include mental disorders and psychosocial disabilities as well as other mental states associated with significant distress, impairment in functioning, or risk of self-harm. People with mental health conditions are more likely to experience lower levels of mental well-being, but this is not always or necessarily the case.

Protective factors similarly occur throughout our lives and serve to strengthen resilience. They include our individual social and emotional skills and attributes as well as positive social interactions, quality education, decent work, safe neighbourhoods and community cohesion, among others.

Promoting child and adolescent mental health is another priority and can be achieved by policies and laws that promote and protect mental health, supporting caregivers to provide nurturing care, implementing school-based programmes and improving the quality of community and online environments. School-based social and emotional learning programmes are among the most effective promotion strategies for countries at all income levels.

In the context of national efforts to strengthen mental health, it is vital to not only protect and promote the mental well-being of all, but also to address the needs of people with mental health conditions.

Create a study schedule, eliminate distractions, and try studying frequently for shorter periods of time. Use a variety of learning methods such as reading the information, writing it down, and teaching it to someone else.

Practice testing and distributed practice have been found to be two of the most effective learning strategies. Test yourself in order to practice recalling information and spread your learning sessions out into shorter sessions over a longer period of time.

The easiest way to learn is to build on the things that you already know. As you gradually extend your knowledge a little bit at a time, you'll eventually build a solid body of knowledge around that topic.

Five ways to learn include visual, auditory, text-based, kinesthetic, and multimodal learning. The VARK model of learning styles suggests that people tend to have a certain preference for one or more of these ways to learn.

It's no secret that students, especially college and high-school ones, tend to put their sleep on the backburner. However, people often overlook the fact that good sleep habits play an integral role in academic success and overall wellbeing.

Good sleep is important for learning because it improves memory, attention and creativity, which are all essential for cognitive functions. During sleep, especially in the deep stages, our brain consolidates and processes the information we have learned throughout the day. This helps us to retain information more effectively, which is crucial for successful academic performance.
