I don't really have much interest in Modern Hebrew nor desire to learn it, as I would have little use for it. However, as a Christian, I would like to learn to read Biblical Hebrew to study the Tanakh, in its original language, and gain a deeper understanding of it.

Knowing biblical Hebrew enables you to engage deeply and richly with the Old Testament in its original language. But because the Bible is a decidedly Jewish book, and the authors of both testaments were all Jews familiar with the Hebrew language and Jewish thought, learning biblical Hebrew will also give you new insight into the meaning of New Testament writings.

You may prefer to study Hebrew in a more traditional format: seminary. You can learn biblical Hebrew at most mid- to large-size theological seminaries. These seminaries all partner with Logos Bible Software in some way so that you get access to Logos to help you with your studies:

Dr. Michael Heiser shows you how to use biblical Hebrew to become a competent interpreter of the Old Testament. Perform word studies alongside an expert and learn to avoid common mistakes. Learn grammatical terminology used in commentaries and journal articles so you can follow the discussion. Learn more.

Once you start to get the hang of things, check out DailyDoseofHebrew.com. It is one of the most helpful biblical Hebrew websites around. As the name suggests, every single day, they exegete a new Bible verse from the Old Testament. They do this on video and walk you through step-by-step how to exegete Scripture in Hebrew. The website also has tons of tools and resources to help you dive deeper into Hebrew. I highly recommend it.

This course is best for students who have no prior experience with Hebrew. Read, write, and speak in Hebrew from day one. You will learn grammar and vocabulary with an interactive digital textbook and meet in a live, online class.

This course is designed for students with at least two years of Hebrew under their belts. Students will customize their own curriculum and pursue the biblical texts that most interest them. This course equips you for independent study!

The earliest Hebrew writing, dating to the tenth century BC, used a picture-based Phoenician script that scholars call Paleo-Hebrew. It appears in ancient inscriptions from the biblical land of Canaan, which became the territory of Israel and Judah.

A Modern Hebrew speaker with a secular education can read biblical texts and recognize most of the words, but will likely struggle to interpret them due to shifts in word usage and now-defunct grammatical features present in ancient writing. Conversely, someone who only knows Biblical Hebrew will find many familiar words in modern speech, but will lack the necessary range and context to participate or make sense of it. For comparison, try getting around Athens today with Homer and Plato as your only background in Greek!

The combination of sounds and images allows students to quickly and enjoyably understand Hebrew words, in the ways that biblical writers used them. Our vocabulary learning platform is what flashcards want to be when they grow up!

In every class session, students are also exposed to additional comprehensible input in a way that equips them to interact with Old Testament Hebrew actively. The best way to learn to read the language of the Jewish Scriptures is to speak and write it!

Beginner courses cover the fundamentals of biblical grammar such as nouns, verbal stems, prefixes and suffixes. Advanced courses introduce you to the genres of biblical literature, including poetry and prophetic texts, and offer opportunities to workshop passages with your fellow adult learners in real-time.

Translate a biblical book or extended narrative from start to finish. Explore narrative flow, unusual qere and ketiv cases, rare verb forms, and unique idioms. Learn how and when to disagree with mainstream English translations.

How long does it take to complete the certificate?

It is possible to meet all the certificate program requirements in 18 months. Students with some prior background in biblical Hebrew may be able to complete it in less time. The certificate program must be completed within five years of the start date.

I started this website back in 2004. At the time I was on staff at Briercrest College and Seminary in Caronport, Saskatchewan, and we needed a distance learning option for non-resident seminary students who had a Biblical Hebrew requirement in their program. Most of the seminary courses were one week modulars but that obviously wasn't going to work for a language course. Long story short, I ended up making a deal with the school where they would provide some resources (computer hardware and multimedia software) and I would make a series of first year Hebrew lectures on my own time, that I would then own, but we would also use in the Briercrest distance Hebrew course. The arrangement worked out well. Briercrest got a course and I got a website.

As a professor of Greek and New Testament at SAGU, I naturally champion the study of Biblical languages so here are 7 reasons why the original Biblical languages hold great promise for those who consecrate their time and effort to learn them.

Additionally, each chapter ends with a devotional, which is meant to give the reader a reminder of their overarching goal for learning Hebrew: deeper love of God. They serve also as small victories because they remind the Hebrew student that they have, in fact, learned enough to engage with the language devotionally, even if it is pronouncing the Hebrew words.

The Tiberian system of marking vowels in Hebrew has been used exclusively for more than 1,000 years. In this lecture, discover the signs that mark short and long vowels, and learn how vowels can change their spelling (and, slightly, their sound) without changing their meaning.

Get an introduction to the five different Hebrew verb forms: finite, infinitive, adjective, participle, and imperative. Plus, learn three ways of identifying something as definite (rather than indefinite): by using the definite article (ha), by labeling it with a personal pronoun, and by naming it.

Look at some essential Hebrew reference books out there (besides biblical translations and commentaries), including reference grammars and three major Biblical Hebrew dictionaries. Close out the course by completing your line-by-line reading of Numbers 22.

BiblicalHebrew.com was launched in October 2022. We have been building more and more resources and adding more and more features every month. All of this to help you learn Hebrew and related languages!

We have compiled answers to some of the most common questions about learning Hebrew, our pronunciation, and licensing. Browse the accordion to the right for some of the most common questions, or click below to see our full page of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs).

The best thing you can do is learn various "shorashim" (root words) and learn how to conjugate them. I suggest you get this book; it's a book that has tons of Hebrew verbs and tables on how to conjugate each one according to various pronouns. It has a Hebrew and an English side.

Biblingo is an app developed for learning the biblical languages (very specifically, New Testament Koine Greek, Biblical Hebrew), through a (semi-)communicative approach. I became aware of Biblingo some time ago, and followed some of their pre-launch promotional material, but more recently decided to test it out with a 10-day free trial.

The biblingo interface is smooth, and the underlying principles are generally sound. The de-emphasis of explicit grammar, the modulisation and indeed granularization of learning chunks, and the focus on image/video material for direct association of vocab, are all great features. So, too, is the use of a symbolic code for sentence structures.

All of that to say, we still have a lot of plans to improve the app (even besides those above), but we are hopeful that what we have now can be of use to people as is. We are also working on later lessons for the language learning, which could be of use to more advanced students if they could start from there with our placement test.

"I just finished these first videos in Read the Hebrew Bible. I am amazed at how much I have learned already. I was watching a news story last night and there was a banner in Hebrew in the background and I had read 2 words before I realized what I was doing! Thanks so much."

"Todah Seth: I too am an older woman, I've taught for over 27 years many biblical courses, but my heart yearned for the true original Hebrew Torah. You are a great teacher, I loved your translation not interpretation- It's exactly what I've searched for!!!!"

This is the real deal. I've tried to learn Hebrew a few other times, on my own and with weekly instruction. I think this time it's gonna work. THANK YOU!!!... I, too, believe you will be blessed in this world and in the world to come, where it really counts.

Boy, is this teaching excellent. I finally feel that I am in a Yeshiva! You are very good and the sources that you are citing are excellent and help me to feel that I am learning from a scholar. Thank you for the time and effort that you are putting into this course.

I have been learning Hebrew on my own for 16 years but just cannot seem to make it workable. I feel that this is really helping to "connect the dendrils" so I can actually begin to read, understand and speak our language. Todah rabbah!

I have been wanting to learn Hebrew and be able to understand what is actually written, not just translation. You are putting it all into one, in a way that...is quite amazing. I am so glad I decided to do this.

I do not want you to have to struggle to learn Hebrew like I did. So I will teach you in a way that you will read and understand God's word, in the original Hebrew, starting from the very first lesson!

You will read and understand the Hebrew Bible tag_hash_112___________. You will be learning Biblical Hebrew directly from the texts of the Hebrew Bible. Doesn't that make sense? Isn't that what you have been looking for? 2351a5e196
