Historical Context:
Indigenous and Native languages have been attacked since the beginning of colonization. A brief timeline shows how policies have been implemented over the past centuries seeking to eradicate these sacred languages. Despite systematic and violent practices, programs, and legislation (Bilingual Education and Immigrant Rights Timeline), many languages survived and embody the resilience and resistance of our people. In order for our languages to thrive, we must intentionally fight for the right to have multilingual and multicultural education.
Language Orientations
Language Orientations have shaped policies in education and the development of language programs. The lack of support for bilingual and Heritage education stem from looking a diversity of languages as a problem. One of the Chicano Movement's goals was to fight for the right for bilingual and bicultural education. Language is a resource, and when viewed from that perspective, an asset and a tool for unity through valuing diversity.

Benefits of Multilingualism
Multilingualism has many benefits in a global economy, but for Heritage Speakers, it's more than just an asset, it's a way of life and it's a part of who we are. It's more than just learning and maintaining Spanish, it's also about reclaiming the many Indigenous languages native to Latin American countries.
