I was born and raised in Argentina, to a family who made a lot of sacrifices to raise me and my sister and to ensure that both of us could go to college. I was fortunate enough to be born in a country where universities and colleges are free. This great system allowed people from disadvantaged social-economic status to have equal access to higher education. I strongly believe that education is a universal right and, because of that, must be accessible for all.
I graduated with a B.A in History in Argentina, and I taught in my country in middle and high school. I moved to the United States in 2009 when I got married. I have a Social Studies Teaching and an Elementary Teaching license from Hamline University and a Master of Arts in Literacy Education from Saint Mary’s University. I’m currently a candidate for a PhD in Literacy with concentration in Bilingual Education.
I love to read, to learn new things and advocate to change inequities. In 2015, I met a group of amazing teachers of color who were worried about the educational achievement gap that Minnesota has, which has been so detrimental for our students of color. We also realized the lack of diversity in the profession, the systemic barriers to prevent access of minorities to the profession and the lack of retention of those teachers of color who do enter the profession. We started advocating and organizing along with other educators to fight for opportunities for all and soon formed the League of Latino Educators. I was also given the opportunity to be appointed to the Governing Board of Ethnic and Minority Affairs Committee (EMAC) at Education Minnesota.
I believe in the impact that common people who work together can have in society and I’m sure that those small changes over time will lead us to a future that is fairer and more equal. If you work in the field of education or if you are a student, please join us in the journey.
I live in the city of Minneapolis with my husband Erik and my son Maximo. I currently work as a 4th grade Spanish Immersion teacher in the Prior Lake-Savage school district.
