These two products solve different problems in completely different ways, and picking the wrong one means you will end up with gear you cannot use or a vehicle setup that limits your mobility.
• Leader Accessories Roof Rack Cargo: Its biggest strength is its sheer surface area (64" x 39") and integrated wind fairing for highway stability, but it requires specific cross-bar spacing and adds significant weight to your roof. This pick is for the overlander who needs a permanent, heavy-duty platform for camping gear.
• This pick is for the utility driver who needs to haul heavy equipment like ATVs or large toolboxes without modifying their roof.
The Leader Accessories Roof Rack Cargo Basket is built for people who treat their vehicle as a mobile base camp. With an overall dimension of 64 inches in length and 39 inches in width, this unit offers a massive footprint that simply does not exist on most other roof racks. When you are planning an extended road trip or heading into remote off-road trails where you need to carry tents, sleeping bags, coolers, and recovery gear simultaneously, the sheer square footage here is a game-changer. You are not just looking for a place to strap a bag down; you are looking for a flat, stable deck to organize your entire expedition.
One of the most critical features for anyone driving off-road or at high speeds on highways is the included steel wind fairing. In my experience analyzing these designs, a flat metal basket usually creates a lot of turbulence and drag, which can ruin fuel economy and create a loud drone inside the cabin. The addition of the fairing suggests a design philosophy focused on long-distance travel rather than just short-term hauling. Combined with the durable black powder coating, this rack is clearly engineered to resist rust and scratches from debris kicked up by tires during rugged driving.
However, this product demands a specific vehicle configuration. It mounts using four universal U-bolts onto existing cross bars, but those bars must be square and less than 4.6 inches wide or round and less than 1.35 inches in diameter. Furthermore, there is a hard constraint on the distance between your cross bars; they must be spaced greater than 29.7 inches apart to accommodate the extension part. If your SUV has fixed cross bars with a narrower spread, such as certain models of the Highlander, this rack simply will not fit without modification.

This is the ideal choice for the off-roader who already has a robust roof rack system installed and wants to maximize vertical space without worrying about hitting the garage ceiling or needing to remove the rack every time they park. It is a "set it and forget it" solution for those who prioritize cargo volume and aerodynamic stability over portability.
The RIGMEC 500 serves a completely different demographic: the heavy hauler who prioritizes capacity and flexibility over roof-mounted convenience. While the Leader rack focuses on surface area, the RIGMEC focuses on raw structural integrity and weight support. If you are transporting items like lawn mowers, large generators, or heavy tool chests, the roof is likely not the right place, and this hitch carrier is the only option that makes sense.
Its construction is defined by a heavy-duty steel frame and side rails that stand 7 inches high. These rails are not just decorative; they provide essential containment for loose items that might otherwise slide off during aggressive cornering or braking. The steel under support frame adds another layer of stability, ensuring the carrier doesn't flex under the immense loads it is designed to carry. For anyone who uses their vehicle for work or serious recreation where the cargo itself is heavy, this added rigidity is non-negotiable.
The defining feature of the RIGMEC 500 is its folding capability. Unlike the rigid, bolted-on nature of the roof basket, this carrier folds up against the hitch when not in use. This allows you to access your rear hatch or liftgate without removing the unit entirely, a practical advantage for daily drivers who might only need the extra space occasionally. It fits standard Class III and IV hitch receivers with a 2-inch opening, which covers a vast majority of trucks, SUVs, and even some larger sedans. The dimensions of 60 inches by 22 inches offer a deep, narrow footprint that keeps the center of gravity lower than a roof mount, improving vehicle stability compared to carrying weight high up.
This product is perfect for someone who does not have a roof rack or prefers not to deal with the physics of roof loading. It is also the logical choice for users who need to move their vehicle frequently between different terrains and want a carrier that can be folded away to prevent damage or theft. It is a utilitarian beast built for reliability and versatility across a wide range of vehicles.
• Best for maximum surface area → Leader Accessories Roof Rack Cargo: At 64" x 39", it offers significantly more floor space for spreading out bulky, lightweight items like soft bags.
• Best for highway aerodynamics → Leader Accessories Roof Rack Cargo: The included wind fairing reduces drag and noise, a feature absent in the open-frame RIGMEC design.
• Best for daily usability and parking → RIGMEC 500: The folding mechanism allows you to clear the rear of the vehicle instantly, whereas the roof rack remains fixed.
• Best for off-roading with fixed gear → Leader Accessories Roof Rack Cargo: Once mounted, it stays put and protects gear from dust and rain, making it superior for long-term expeditions.
• Best for vehicles without roof bars → RIGMEC 500: It requires no roof installation, only a standard 2-inch hitch receiver.
• Best for compact storage when empty → RIGMEC 500: Folding it up takes up minimal space, while the Leader rack always occupies your roof real estate.
In my opinion, if I were setting up a vehicle specifically for off-roading and long-term camping trips where I needed to carry a tent, chairs, and a cooler securely on top of the car, I would buy the Leader Accessories Roof Rack Cargo. The combination of the wind fairing and the massive surface area creates a dedicated command center for my gear that stays protected and accessible. For the specific intent of off-roading where you often need to keep gear stowed and secure for days at a time, the roof-mounted solution feels more purpose-built for the adventure.
No, it requires a vehicle with existing cross bars that are either square (under 4.6" wide) or round (under 1.35" diameter), and the bars must be spaced more than 29.7 inches apart.
It is designed specifically for standard 2-inch Class III and IV hitch receivers, so it will not fit smaller 1.25-inch hitches found on some passenger cars.
