1994 was my official Captain's year and was typified by large attendances, 35 braved the wet weather for the season opener at R&A Bootle, although at least 4 members retired to the Netherton after just 9 holes!! Albie Dobson won with a nett 64 on his first outing.
A feature of the year saw many members getting much deserved handicap cuts, including Eddie, Biffo, Fingers, Smudger, Dave and Mark Adkin, Heather, John Cowan, Jim Hughes and last but not least Big Mart!
John Cowan won Brackenwood with a great nett 63, Dave Adkin won the Walton Hall Stab with 41 points just pipping Mart. There were 2 outings at Hoylake - Dave Hughes winning the first and he was also runner-up in the Stab outing to Graeme Collier (anyone remember him?)
Mark Adkin won the Rosebowl with 80 points and on our first visit to Llangollen, Neil Musson edged out Biffo by one-third of a shot! As usual the first hole proved tricky, none more so than for Pete Henshaw who carded an 18 there in the afternoon - maybe a few beers had been sunk over lunch?!
Biffo won the outing at Ellesmere Port and also the Caldy Shield at West Derby. Colin won on our first trip to Carlisle with a fine nett 66 and he also won the Singles at West Derby for the third time, equalling Tucker's record. Smudger and John Skyner won the Doubles. The final outing of the year must have been in very fine conditions at Arrowe Park with some excellent scores and won by John Phillips with a nett 59!
LCS managed to retain the Cleek with a halved match at Oswestry, but Telford went on to win the Matheson Trophy, for the first time contested over 4 rounds at Penrith, in a close contest with EK. Sadly LCS came a distant 3rd, having just 3 points, one in each session, before the Singles. Nevertheless Waggott and Banks won a creditable 3 points out of 4. Thankfully things turned out much better the next time I was Captain!!
Cheers and Merry Christmas, Steve
