1993 proved a popular year with attendances at outings regularly exceeding 30. However, the year will always be remembered for the passing of our captain that year - Billy Mac - who died of a heart attack while on holiday just after a game of water polo. He was the epitome of the 'larger than life' character and he had particularly enjoyed winning the Cleek at Heswall! His last game was at the Arrowe Park outing where he played Martin in the Singles, turning round a 3 hole deficit to a win on the 19th. RIP big fella!
It was a good year for Fleming and Phillips, who not only won the Doubles, but JP won both Stab outings at Haigh Hall and Arrowe Park and The Major won both the Hoylake and Ellesmere Port outings.
Bobby Birch won the season opener round the corner from work at the R&A Bootle and Dave Hughes, now a fully-fledged member, won at Brackenwood and also won the Singles. Eddie was often in the hunt at the outings and Mark Adkin, Dave's son, played as a guest but also posted some very good scores. Another guest was a certain Tony Rimmer (did he have hair back then?!)
Wag won his first Rosebowl with a tremendous 43 points in the afternoon, a 2 under par round of 69. The first WH MacGettigan Memorial Trophy was held at Denbigh and was won by Mike McGee in somewhat difficult circumstances. Gerry won the Walton Hall outing, generally playing well all year and Jimmy Banks won another Caldy Shield at West Derby.
In Bill's absence, I captained the team for the Matheson Trophy in my first visit to Penrith. This year's event was due to be the first to have 4 sessions, but on Friday, Penrith GC was flooded and the Foursomes abandoned. We completed the Singles at Crosby-on-Eden (not be visited again in Cumbria Cup history!). LCS came a narrow 3rd, with a notable Singles match where Paul Booth beat Bernie in one of their many 'Grand Matches'.
Cheers Steve
