1991 saw an increase in attendances such that I had to extend the spreadsheets! We had 33 at Brackenwood and this year we also welcomed Eddie Rogers, Dave Hughes and Gerry Figari who were to start their 2 years qualification!
Some excellent scoring again leading to lots of handicap cuts. Wingnut had a great year, winning Brackenwood with an amazing nett 56, but followed this up by also winning Ellesmere Port. Billy won Bootle and Gerry Haigh Hall. Neil Musson won another Rosebowl, shooting 49 points (nett 58) in the morning. We had a team comp at Hoylake, where Eddie made his debut , but Gerry was best individual with nett 65.
We had our first 36-hole medal comp at Bidston - Billy shot a nett 59 in the morning, nearly taking out an angler on the first. Wag was awesome in the afternoon shooting the Society's first ever gross par round - 70 nett 64. But neither were a match for Lee, who had nett rounds of 64 and 63. Third in the afternoon was Mart with a nett 65 for his first cut.
Pete Manning then won Walton Hall with a nett 60 (despite a 2 shot penalty on the first for holing his long putt with the flag still in!) and 9 clear of 2nd place. Jimmy Banks won the Caldy Shield at West Derby, where we had a Texas scramble in the afternoon. Neil had beaten Colin in the morning in a high quality Singles final, but in the afternoon they ganged up on me in the Doubles - I played on my own as Heather had just had her appendix out!
John Phillips played well all year but without a win, but the Major rolled back the years with an impressive nett 61 at Arrowe Park to end the season.
As for the team comps, 1991 saw the start of the Home and Away Cleek matches (previously always played at Hill Valley) with Telford winning, as usual, at Wallasey. At Penrith, Causio's fine team (picture below courtesy of Lee), came 3rd again. Wag won his first Singles beating Brian Coyle and Gerry beat Tucker who had now defected to Telford.
Cheers Steve
