1989 saw some remarkable scoring throughout the year. Bernie kicked off his Captaincy year with a nett 62 at Bootle. Now knowing which way to go (!) Billy shot a nett 60 at Brackenwood. 'Bobby' Birch registered a victory at new venue Haigh Hall. I managed to win at Arrowe Park (nett 65) and Walton Hall.
It was also 1989 that saw the inaugural Auld Lang Syne challenge match, played annually at Mold until 1997. A very popular matchplay event between Vic House, Netherton PC, Telford and the Exiles, Fourball better ball in the morning and Singles in the afternoon. Some players ended up playing for 3 or even 4 different teams and the event was so popular that one year we had 36 players. One particular fourball featured the 'Controller Challenge' where everyone who used the club smashed the ball down the middle, except for it's owner Bernie, who could never get to grips with infamous club!!
Causio won his 4th Rosebowl with a phenomenal 92 points, 49 in the morning round with a nett 58. This Rosebowl was subsequently 'lost' in the Freshfield hostelry after a long evening's celebration!
Mike McGee then destroyed Hoylake with a nett 58. What a 3-ball with Fingers and Billy, they were a combined nett 27 under par!! Also at Hoylake, although not a Stab comp, 'Nobby' Naylor scored what would be a 6-pointer by eagling the par 5 15th.
A new venue for Finals Day, West Derby proved a more difficult test. Biffo won the outing and Billy achieved his Holy Grail by finally winning the Singles against Nobby. John Skyner won the PM Stab with 40 points, but Mart struggled again in this comp, registering 16 X's!
Lee finished the season off in style at the Arrowe Park Stab outing with 43 points.
Finally, normal service was resumed at Penrith with LCS coming third again. Strangely I was non-travelling reserve that day - not sure what I could have done had I been needed!!
Cheers Steve
