1988 saw an influx of members with 36 different players across the season. There was great interest from the PC at Netherton, notable debuts from Neil Musson, who won at Southport, and Fingers and a return from Pete Manning, who won Hoylake. Also with Heather leading from the front, a further 4 ladies joined, with Val Carr scoring a new record of 212 at Brackenwood. We even had a Ladies' prize at Arrowe Park, won by Michelle Kennedy (Heather didn't play that day!).
It was a good year for doubles partners Alan Smith and John Skyner, 'Smudger' winning Brackenwood and Arrowe Park and John winning Walton Hall and the Singles. Meanwhile Biffo continued his fine form by winning an obviously very wet Bootle and Causiio won his 3rd Rosebowl.
I had my first Society win at Childwall which was also due to be my last appearance. Gerry and I were due to leave LCS later that year and rules meant we could no longer be members of the Society. An enlightened committee changed the rules to allow us to continue to play and further relaxations since have led to the wonderfully diverse set of friends which represent LCSGS today.
The weather that day was atrocious, but current Childwall members may be bemused by the scores over the 3 years we played Finals day there - plenty of double figures!! In the afternoon just 8 brave souls ventured out for the PM Stab comp, won by Martin Wilson. Our 'Big' Mart struggled in the conditions and set a new low record of 4 Stab points for his round. Nowadays he regularly scores 4 points on one hole!!
1988 will always be remembered for LCS winning the Matheson trophy under Gerry's captaincy. EK scored just 4.5 points as our 12 heroes got 13 points in total. Neil even managed to drag Bernie to a doubles win - Billy, though, was a 'double doughnut'!!
Cheers Steve
