Next Lesson

I will not be able to teach on Friday, May 3rd. Instead, I encourage you to meet together, without me, on May 3rd, in our usual room at the same time. You should go over your answers to the homework and do exercize I on p.92, of Ultimate Italian, using the "voi" form instead of the outdated "Loro" form, then study the "Noi" imperative together and do the exercises on p.92-94.  We will have a lesson on May 10th, and a make-up lesson at my house (really close to La Causerie, 5420 Cherry St) on Friday May 17th, at 9.30.  

This Summer

I will offer a group lesson throughout the summer, practicing all the most useful things we have learned this year in Italian 2. 

Lessons will be held on Friday mornings 9 - 10.20, at Audrey Schwegler's house at 5800 Drury Lane, Mission Hills.  We will have 8 sessions between June 7 - August 16, with no lessons on July 5 and 12, and one other date TBD soon.  

Cost: $200

• Piccolo Clip dei Funerali di Giuseppe Verdi 

• Scena Famosa, dal film Senso, 1954,   -This is a famous scene from the film, Senso, a glorious historical romance, set in and around mid Nineteeth Century Venice, and focussing on an illict love affair between a Venetian aristocrat (played by Allida Valli) and an Austrian lieutenant (played by Farley Granger). In this scene we see an aria of one of Verdi's most famous opera's, Il Trovatore, where the opera's hero gives a call to arms to go and rescue his mother from an oppressive count, who has enslaved her. The symbolism of the Italian/operatic hero who liberates his mother/motherland is further emphasized by the camera angle that makes the singer look as if he is charging the Austrian Soldiers in the audience with his sword. Meanwhile, Italian protestors smuggle in red, white and green flyers, which are thrown from the top of the theatre, in a nationalistic and rebellious demonstration against the foreign army who were at that time being fought in North Eastern Italy in an attempt to found the new Italian nation (1850's).
