Kenneth Short was a member of both the basketball and track teams, but his real talent was on the football field where he was an offensive end and defensive linebacker. His nickname in High School was, “Silent Death.” According to teammate Jim Simonelli, “Kenneth never talked - that's why we called him, ‘Silent Death.’ He was a very aggressive player and when he hit you, you knew you were hit.”
Honors achieved in high school included ten letters, the Long Branch High School High Jump Record (6’½”), and a place on both the All-Shore and All-Country Football Teams.
He played center on the basketball team and, in track, he participated in the 100-yard dash, the 220 yard dash, the 440-yard dash, high jump and broad jump. After high school, he continued playing football and was a wide receiver for the Long Branch Touch Football team which played in both the Middletown and Belmar Touch Football Leagues. They won championships in both leagues.
Throughout high school and beyond Mr. Short sang bass in the popular singing group “The Voltaires.”
