In 1957 when a physical education professor arrived at Erskine College, the school didn't know what a bundle of talent it had hired. Twenty-five years later, Harry Stille holds more prestigious titles than anyone else In Due West: Professor, Head of the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation; baseball coach, Mayor of Due West, artist, and director of the Robert Stone Galloway Physical Activity Center. The last title he earned as a member of the Flying Fleet Hall of Fame, which was widely bestowed upon him because his planning and drawings where the Hall of Fame is located.
When Dr. Stille took over coaching duties in 1958, he coached Erskine to 317 victories in 23 seasons not counting his leave of absence in 1973 to complete his Doctorate. Twice his team's won National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics District championships, and the 1973 team of players he recruited also want a district title.
Dr. Stille has garnered many athletic honors:1965 NAIA District 26 Coach of the Year, 1970, 1984 and 1985, NAIA District 6 coach of the year, 1984 and 1985, South Carolina College Coach of the Year and 1986 NAIA Hall of Fame for baseball. Dr. Stille was also elected to the state of South Carolina House of Representatives from 1993 until retiring in 2004.
