Edison E. (Ted) Bresett came to Long Branch Chattle High School in 1924 as a teacher and coach. He coached basketball, baseball and football until 1936, was the head basketball coach through the 1945-46 season and coached his last Long Branch High School team, a baseball team, in 1948. He served as Athletic Director until retiring in 1957.
Bresett’s coaching career was marked by extreme high and lows. In 1932, his football team’s loss to Asbury Park on a disputed rule interpretation cause a temporary suspension of the traditional series, and the 1935 football team, the “Jinxbreakers,” ended Asbury Park’s 19 year domination of the rivalry. His 1936, 1938 and 1942 teams were the Central Jersey Group III Champions.
In September of 1966, the Long Branch Board of Education adopted a resolution to change the name of the High School stadium to “Bresett Stadium.” In making the recommendation which resulted in the name change, Superintendent of Schools, William H. Meskill, said, “To thousands of Long Branch High School graduates, Mr. Bresett’s name is synonymous with firmness and honesty. His long and distinguished service deserves a public testimonial.” On October 1, 1966, the High School football field was officially named, “Bresett Stadium."
