Michael graduated from Long Branch High School in 1953 where he helped lead the 1952 " Green Wave " Football Team to a State Championship. Known to all his friends as "Iron Mike" he was named to the first team All-State and All-County Footballs Teams. He attended Valley Forge Military Academy on a scholarship where he was named to the All-American Football Team in 1954. He served his country honorably for eight years in the United States Army and was honored with 4 medals as an MP.
