GIANT KALAMAY IN
CANDON CITY
Candon City, renowned as the "Tobacco Capital of the Philippines," has a rich tradition of producing the country's largest kalamay—a cherished Filipino delicacy made from sticky rice, coconut milk, and sugar. This year, the city upheld its legacy by crafting a colossal 10-meter-diameter kalamay at Candon South Central Elementary School. Weighing an impressive 1,639 kilograms, the massive treat was eagerly consumed in under five minutes by a crowd exceeding 1,500 residents.
The monumental undertaking involved the dedicated efforts of fifty women who meticulously prepared the kalamay using approximately 2,000 coconuts, 900 kilograms of both white and brown sugar, 150 gantas of rice flour, and over 20 kilograms of peanuts. This communal endeavor not only showcased the city's culinary prowess but also highlighted the spirit of bayanihan—community cooperation—that is deeply ingrained in Filipino culture.
Candon City's commitment to preserving and celebrating its cultural heritage is further exemplified by its annual Kalamay Festival. During this event, the community comes together to honor the traditional art of kalamay-making, reinforcing the city's identity and fostering a sense of unity among its residents.
The creation of such a giant kalamay serves as a testament to Candon City's dedication to its traditions and its ability to bring people together through shared cultural experiences.
