Laura Lowery is the founder of Art by Academics, a creative project launched by the BU faculty member and scientist in 2021.  In 2003, Lowery took a watercolor class on a whim in graduate school.  A more technically and scientifically minded individual, she didn’t envision painting becoming a large part of her life.  And although she did enjoy the class, she went without painting for nearly two decades, until a creative spark reintroduced her to watercolor.  Lowery now embraces the artform as active meditation, as she finds freedom and a therapeutic outlet in painting abstract and repetitive designs.  Her creative project, Art by Academics, encourages watercolor painting by people who might not normally consider themselves to be artistically inclined.
