You are now able to make global edits to your document by inserting text boxes and graphics the same way you would on the normal pages. You can also add columns that will affect all pages related to the master.

I'm getting back into InDesign after not touching it for years so I am following this tutorial and I noticed in his pages panel, his page said 'a-master' while mine says 'a-parent.' Are they the same thing or do I need to change some setting to make my a-parent page to a-master?

I am about 20 pages into a proposal and I accidentally applied a master page over every existing page. I don't know when I did it, as I didn't realize until I went back to change information on a previous page. I can't "undo" as it may have been a while ago and I closed and saved since then. Is there a way to remove this? I tried to remove master items but it's also removing valuable pieces of information. I'm including an example, although there is sensitive information on every page so I have to crop it pretty tight. Any help would be incredible.

if you apply the wrong master all you have to do is apply none or apply whatever other master you do want. if you pasted items on a page and you need them to be on a master, cut them from the page you had them in, paste them to the master and apply that master.

As of now, there is no way to do this, however, it sounds like a great feature request. I would request if you can take a moment and post it on our UserVoice page ( ). Once done paste the link here so that like-minded people can also upvote it.

If I may ask - (I often regret that I didn't continue with my programming classes in the childhood :)) - is there any way to make this script apply the Master on every selected page in the Pages view, and not just on the one active page?

Personally, I have assigned a hotkey to "Apply Master..." (as Kelly V. aka documentgeek suggested above as well). I do most of my work on a Windows machine, and so I can hit Tab and then use the arrow/page/home/end keys and/or type-ahead for its name, to quickly select any master out of a dozen or so.

This script is a game-changer for me - it changes the Master Page based on a specific paragraph style - so for me, every time there is a paragraph style called "Chapter Number" (which is set to always start on a new page), it changes the Master Page to "C-no page nums or header." Works like a charm and saves a ton of manual effort.

Because a selection of pages is the same as a selection of items one could script that selection and apply a master with Jongware's idea using parts of a script file name to every item of that selection. Because every item of the selection is a page.

Oh, that's a great suggestion! it works well with the Alt-click Master page, however I am not a scripter and have no idea how to implement this into _Jongware_'s code. It would be great if it could work too.

I realize similar questions have been asked, but master pages have changed somwehwat in SharePoint Server 2013, and this is actually several questions in one. I've read lots and lots of articles, and found conflicting information. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would then like to push the new master page with these changes down to all existing team sites without breaking anything. These are collaboration sites with lots of content editors and creators, not sites with a few editors and a big read-only audience.

However, I've read that activating Server Publishing in a team site turns on a Pages gallery, instead of the existing SitePages, and changes the site's home page. I've also read that new pages are created in Pages and not SitePages, which would create a mess with the existing content. Does it change or break anything when I activate Server Publishing (not Infrastructure, which is done) on my top level and lower level team sites?

I recently blogged about how to restore the Navigate Up button in SharePoint 2013 using an AdditionalPageHead delegate control. This lets you add a control to the header of every SharePoint page and you can then do the necessary functions to restore the navigate up button. See this link.

I have swedish website and we are creating Finland website. We want the same strcuture for both of the websites. So, I imported the pages from Swedish to Finland site. I am using Language Manager tool for replacing content from Svenska to Finnish. But the problem is all the pages and blocks imported shows master language as Svenska. We dont have Svenska language in Finnish website.

Just to make things clear. Did you create a new website, i.e. a new start page node? Or did you translate the swedish website to finish? If it's the latter, then everything is as it should be. Master language is just the language that the content was first created in. So you can have multiple master languages throughout your website depending on how you create the pages. E.g. some conten might just be available in finish, then the master language is finish for that content.

We already have Swedish website created with content and are creating new Finnish website on separate database. As the block and pages structure is kind of similar along with images we decided to export Swedish pages and import those in Finnish site. I created start page manually so that website will be created Finnish as master language and then imported the pages and content. I have only Finnish language enabled in the site. Now when I started tarnslating the blocks by using Language Manager I got to know that pages and blocks still showing Swedish as master language.

Since it's a seperate database I would just switch languageID from 'sv' to 'fi-FI' in tblLanguageBranch, then Finish will be the master language (but in Swedish obviously). Or as Tahir mentioned, open up the translation package and change the language and then import them. But since you have already imported them I would just switch the language in the database. You might have to delete the already translated content though, since that's in Finish now and you will probably get a constraint error when trying to switch language in the database then.

For example, I have a 3 page master and I drag down the first page - fine; I drag down the second page - fine; I drag down the third page and the first page displays instead of the third. It also happens when I try to put the first page of a 2-page spread on the right-hand page.

Facing pages are used to control the logic of master pages as well as the layout in the Pages Panel. With Facing Pages on, the masters become "right" and "left" not 1 and 2. So InDesign will not let you place a left master on the right page. The logic, to me, seems to be there to prevent a user from mistakenly applying the wrong master page to something.

If you want absolute control over what master page is applied where, you need to turn off Facing Pages and create individual masters then manually place pages in spreads. As non-facing pages, with single page masters, Indesign will allow you to apply any master page to any other page.

You can't drag text from a master page (even though you can highlight a single page in a spread). When you attempt to drag the master page it will automatically fill all available pages in the destination spread by beginning at the first page of the master.

...and making changes to the layout and formatting. There are six default master pages: Title, Single Item, Item and Text, Two Items, and Title Only. New master pages can be created by following the steps below.

The master for an individual page is selected when making a new page, or it is changed for an existing page by selecting the page and in the Object Inspector clicking Properties > LAYOUT > Page layout.

I have a document, with a master page template applied to all pages in the document. There are master text frames inside the master page template, perfectly aligned with the margins on each left, and right page. In my master page template, I have set up the following margins for left pages :

Everything looks good and aligned (text boxes are controled by master pages master text frames) until I delete one page for example, which makes every following right page, a left page, and every left page, a right page.

From this point, in my pages, all text boxes are misaligned to the margins set in the master page template. That is to say that from now on, left pages have text boxes which are the size of right pages text boxes, and right pages text boxes have the size of left pages text boxes.

I might be using this wrong but I can't figure out an auto fix, and this gets really annoying when you have to fine tune your document, remove some elements, which can makes me delete some pages, which causes this issue.

Any fix ? What about a option to make indesign aware when right pages become left pages, and left pages become right pages, and reapply automatically the master page template to adapt to those changes ?

An update from Adobe giving a check box in the settings to allow auto update of text boxes relying on master text frames (created in master page templates) after deleting / shuffling pages would be good though

I created en even simpler file with just pages, 1 master page template with linked master frames and uneven outside margins (56pt for left page and 46pt for right page) and the same happens if you delete a page (the 3rd one) : text boxes are misaligned and not in sync with master page templates.

To correct the issue, you have to select all pages and REAPPLY the master page template to those pages. THEN, the text boxes get aligned again and are correctly  in sync  with the master page template, containing master text frames.

Also, another useful option that would be really handy for the users would be one which would allow the user to select all pages by master page template. Example : select all pages with A master page template applied / select all pages with B master page template

[EDITED]I meant to have a content element, say an image and a footer, as a part of a master page. and then applying that master page to any page in the document where we wish to plug in the image and the footer. I didnt mean a central repository of all other documents. 589ccfa754
