14-16 July 2026, University of Leiden, Netherlands
In dedication to Michael Herrmann
This workshop event is being held to honor the memory of our friend and collaborator Michael Herrmann who passed away unexpectedly in July 2024. The workshop will be centered around the intersection of Michael's wide interests in applied analysis, dynamical systems, and mathematical modeling, with a natural emphasis on nonlinear wave propagation, pattern formation and phase transformation phenomena, broadly conceived.
Michael Herrmann (1973–2024) was a professor of mathematics at TU Braunschweig whose life and work left a lasting mark on applied analysis, dynamical systems, and mathematical modeling. Renowned for his fundamental contributions to wave propagation in lattices and phase-transforming systems with hysteresis, his research combined deep analytical insight with careful numerical experimentation and close international collaboration. Educated in Berlin and shaped by formative years at Humboldt University, the Weierstraß Institute, Oxford, and academic posts in Saarland and Münster, Michael spent the final seven years of his career at TU Braunschweig, where he was a highly respected colleague and mentor. He was deeply engaged in the applied mathematics community remaining scientifically active until his passing. Equally dedicated to teaching, Michael was admired for his clarity, generosity with his time, and unwavering support of students. Remembered for his sharp intellect, warmth, and distinctive sense of humor, he is greatly missed as a scientist, teacher, collaborator, and friend. More on Michaels life and work can be found on his obituary.

By air
The easiest international arrival point is Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS). Frequent direct trains from Schiphol take about 15–20 minutes to Leiden Centraal Station.
By train
Leiden is well connected by Dutch rail. Trains from Amsterdam, The Hague, and Rotterdam stop at Leiden Centraal, which is a short walk from university venues.
Local transport
Leiden’s city centre and most campuses are easily walkable from the train station. Buses and bikes are also convenient ways to get around.
By car
Leiden lies between the A4 and A44 highways and offers parking garages near the city centre.
Visa & entry
Visitors should check Dutch entry requirements and visas appropriate for their nationality before booking travel. Please contact the organizers if you require written confirmation of your participation.
