Members of the Culinary and Bartenders unions overwhelmingly voted Tuesday to authorize their negotiating committees to call for a strike by some 53,000 non-gaming Strip and downtown casino employees.

50,000 hospitality employees who are preparing to go out on strike after June 1 include: Bartenders, guest room attendants, cocktail servers, food servers, porters, bellman, cooks, and kitchen workers employed at the casino resorts on the Las Vegas Strip and Downtown Las Vegas.

The Culinary and Bartenders Unions are encouraging Nevada locals, elected officials, political candidates, and tourists to support workers by not patronizing hotels and casinos in case there is a labor dispute on or after June 1, 2018. In an event of a strike, please do not cross picket lines.

Since the first hotels opened on Fremont Street and Las Vegas Boulevard in the 1930s and 1940s, Las Vegas casinos have had a reputation for decadence, excitement, and luxury. The research I conducted at UNLV Special Collections and Archives has focused on determining whether or not these tendencies are already manifesting in the cultural landscape of Las Vegas casino restaurants. Specifically, I aim to determine whether or not casino restaurants are making the switch to sustainable food models or if maintaining Las Vegas' larger-than-life reputation takes precedence over addressing environmental concerns.

In a statement, Wynn Resorts said it was pleased to reach an agreement that "fulfills our shared goal of providing outstanding benefits and overall compensation to our employees in a work environment that is second to none." The agreement covers about 5,000 union employees at the company's flagship hotel-casino and Encore Resorts.

MGM Resorts and Caesars didn't respond to emailed requests for comment about the issue. Pappageorge said this week that, even as negotiations came down to the wire ahead of the union's plans to strike, the union and casino companies were the "farthest apart" on the issue.

Pappageorge, who led the negotiating teams that secured tentative deals this week with the casino giants, said a cut in daily room cleanings also poses health and safety concerns for the housekeepers who still had to reach a daily room quota.
