"Frame” serves as an educational application that could motivate people to look at paintings that arguably lost their popularity in recent times and experience them in a fresh and changed appearance. It, therefore, renews art and appropriates it to the present.
It as an application and interactive artwork that provides a modern way of experiencing the interdisciplinary product of deep learning and visual art. Deep learning which itself is also somewhat interdisciplinary as it is based on research in neuroscience, is applied to create images that used to be only created by humans in the past. Art is closely connected to creativity, something that is very abstract and therefore hard to both define and to implement into artificial intelligence. There is no definitive answer around the question if machines are creative if they do tasks like these style transfers. Nevertheless, through "frame" the audience is incentivised to judge for themselves if the newly created images can be seen as real "art". The augmented reality environment allows them to freely interact and examine the images and allows the user to dive deeper into the topic on their own behalf.
