American Sign Language Major, Youth Development Studies Minor
My name is Cassady Fortson. I am a May 2026 graduate of Clemson University. My major is Modern Languages: American Sign Language and my minor is in Youth Development Studies. Prior to my time at Clemson, I knew that I wanted to incorporate American Sign Language (ASL) into my coursework somehow, but was unsure as to how that would look. My Junior year, I decided to change my major to ASL. Since then, my language skills and involvement in the Deaf community have skyrocketed significantly.
For my first two years at Clemson, I was a Special Education major, and I believe the coursework taken during this time has prepared me to work with a diverse community of students that I may encounter in the future.
During my time at Clemson, I have had multiple opportunities to get involved in the Deaf community. From consistent involvement in the ASL club to studying abroad in New Zealand and Australia learning about their respective sign languages being involved in their Deaf communities, they have all expanded my allyship and language skills.
Upon graduation, my plan is to continue my involvement in the Deaf community and work as a Special Education teacher. During this time, I also plan to get a masters in Interpreting, eventually planning to interpret and/or work with Deaf students in schools.
This website's purpose is to showcase what I have learned in the Clemson Languages Department through coursework and experiences that reflect my work ethic and passion for continuously improving my ASL skills and cultural knowledge.
Below is my introductory video in ASL.
