Juror’s Statement

Eric Kaster

As a graduate of Columbus College of Art & Design as well as having worked In Higher Ed for well over 30 years in my role as an admissions advisor, I have reviewed thousands of portfolios. I have previously served as juror for both the Ohio Governor's Youth Arts Awards and Lake and Geauga Art Show competition as well as others.

Adhering to the fundamentals of design theory, drawing and color fundamentals, it is possible to precisely assess works of art based on their technical skill, concept, and execution of medium and materials. At first glance, works may attract attention by having an authentic voice anchored in concept and a strong grasp of fundamental skills. It is true that some images may engage one viewer differently than another as there are some criteria that cannot be observed and measured with pure objectivity but with focused competence, solid composition and creative ideas, these are the metrics that will help some pieces rise above others.

While this is not my first competition, I want to go on record saying it was just as difficult a task to eliminate submissions as in any competition I have judged, all were very well deserving of recognition as well executed pieces of art. All of the talented artists who submitted entries should stand tall and be proud of the work you had done. It may be a little tongue and cheek to say but everyone deserves a participation trophy. The elimination process was brutal but does not mean that if not chosen you were any less talented or possess any less potential to succeed in whatever creative endeavor speaks to you personally. To the winners, Congratulations, your work deserves much respect, and to all remember this, your last piece of art is merely a stepping stone to a better piece waiting to be revealed.

“Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.” – Vincent van Gogh
