Underground Racing may have been severely upstaged by AMS Performance at the recent TX2K event, but it still attracts a lot of clients for its twin-turbo conversions. The tuning company specializes in making Lamborghinis and Audi R8s insanely fast and has been fitting turbos to these exotics for a long time now. Back in 2012, we covered a 1,200-horsepower conversion that the company carried out on a Lamborghini Aventador, but now the tuner has stepped up to a new level, becoming the first to strap a pair of turbochargers to the $500,000 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ.

Thanks to the addition of mirror billet turbochargers from Precision Turbo & Engine, the Aventador SVJ no longer produces "just" 759 hp and 537 lb-ft of torque. Instead, it now generates a whopping 1,600 hp at the wheels (no torque figure is provided). That's just scratching the surface of what this car is capable of, as UR says that if the owner (Chris Tawil) upgrades from the current custom clutch and billet flywheel fitted to the build and opts for UR's race-spec clutch, it will safely generate over 2,000 wheel-horsepower. And the best part? The Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva active aero system is still fully functional. AMS may hold the records, but UR is still the king of Lamborghini world-firsts.

Underground Racing just finished working on a Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, upgrading it with their twin-turbo setup which gives new numbers to the 6.5L V12 supercar. The owner who goes by the name Dustin is no stranger to intensely powerful Lamborghinis, he also owns a 3,000hp Huracan STO AWD (word record car) and a 1500hp Huracan STO in progress.

Even the new intake is full billet with lower billet runners. The billet twin-turbos were provided by Precision Turbo. A custom titanium exhaust handles the new noise. The current clutch (custom) with its billet flywheel can handle up to 1,600hp, but once they upgrade to a race clutch the numbers at the wheels will jump to 2,000hp.

Unlike other supercar manufacturers, Lamborghini values the driving experience more than other things. Throttle response and the exhaust sound are essential aspects of the driving experience Lamborghini wants to maintain, and turbochargers dampen both.

Lamborghini wants the driver to feel completely connected to the car, and throttle response is a vital aspect of that. Touching the throttle pedal should instantaneously result in the car accelerating. Naturally aspirated engines (motors without turbochargers or superchargers) have the quickest throttle response.

To understand why Lamborghini chooses not to use turbos in their supercars, you need to understand how a turbocharger works. The following few sections explain how a turbo adds power using exhaust gases.

Gordon Murray insisted that the McLaren F1, the first McLaren road car, be naturally aspirated for the same reasons Lamborghini prefers those engines: driver control and throttle response. But since McLaren relaunched in 2011, all of their vehicles have been turbocharged.

A Lamborghini supercar has never left the factory with a turbocharger, but there have been Lamborghinis with turbochargers installed. These Lambos have turbo kits: a set of all the aftermarket parts required to upgrade a naturally aspirated engine to a turbocharged engine.

In 1994, a customer could walk into a Lamborghini dealership and order a Lamborghini Diablo VT-TT. The TT stood for twin-turbo and made 750 horsepower which was 258 horsepower over the base Lamborghini Diablo VT.

The twin-turbo Diablo program was extremely limited. A Lamborghini dealership in southern California, Platinum Motors, commissioned a 3rd party to design and manufacture a twin-turbo kit. They built five Diablo VT-TTs (four-wheel drive), one Diablo SV-TT (rear-wheel drive), and a handful of other Diablo owners bought the kit and made their own twin-turbo Diablos.

If Lamborghini refuses to put turbos on their cars, what can we expect in its place? Turbos help make more power and help with emissions, but Lamborghini engineers are not willing to sacrifice throttle response.

Lamborghini and its loyal customers value the driving experience, and they are unwilling to compromise throttle response and the engine note. It would be easy to bolt turbos to engines and make the insane power numbers as Ferrari, Koenigsegg, and McLaren while effortlessly passing the emissions tests.

The UR-Aventador can snap off a run to 60 mph in no more than 2.2 seconds, raising the question of whether such a vehicle ever needs to be driven that slowly to begin with. Underground Racing says its changes go far beyond simply strapping two turbos to the 700-hp Aventador's V-12 -- and that making the system work requires a complete engine build. The company says it's keeping many of the details secret so that other tuning shops won't attempt knock-off versions; so far competitors have only been able to squeeze an extra 60-70 hp out of the Aventador's engine with bolt-on pieces.
