Come for the Day or an Overnight Stay
Lake Tejas is a spring fed, recreational lake located one mile east of Colmesneil on FM 256 E. We have rustic cabins, varying campsites, and pavilions along with a highly sought after swim beach. Our beautiful landscape, spring fed lake, and family friendly atmosphere make it the perfect place for birthday parties, scout campouts, school trips, vacations, family reunions, church retreats, or just a fun filled day in the sun.
Our swim beach has approximately 80 yards of sandy beach with plenty of room to roam. Our buoyed swimming area is large enough to accommodate all levels of swimming ability, from the total novice to the advanced swimmer. There is plenty of fun for the entire family with our diving platforms, volleyball, slides, paddle boating, fishing piers, concession building, and hiking trails.
We may have anywhere from 1 to 6 trained Lifeguards on duty at any given time according to the volume of swimmers. These guards are trained in CPR, first aid, and waterfront safety and rescue.
WE ARE NOW OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK!!!
The land that is now known as Lake Tejas was donated to Colmesneil ISD by Lee Feagin, J.P. Mann, and D.P.Mann. The National Youth Administration project began construction in 1939. Lee Taylor, CISD Superintendent, and James Kellum, NYA State Director, oversaw the project. The NYA's purpose was to provide education, jobs, recreation, and counseling for male and female youth ages 16-25. Dedication of Lake Tejas took place on July 24, 1940 and Kellum commented, "Youth need three things: good health, good character, and good work habits." That became the purpose of Lake Tejas.
During excavation a large arrowhead belonging to the Caddo tribe was found and influenced the naming of the lake. Tejas is the Spanish spelling of a Caddo word "taysha" which means "friend" or "ally". The word tejas also influenced the naming of the state of Texas, and to this day an aerial view of the lake resembles our great state.
Our primary goal, to this day, is to provide Colmesneil youth with better opportunities along with exceptional services to our customers. A portion of our profits go to the school district to benefit the students and provide scholarships. We also provide employment opportunities for the young adults in our community.
We will always hold on to our outdoor recreational atmosphere but as the youth and community change we, as a business, must change with it. We have added new inflatables to the swim beach along with kitchenettes to the small cabins. With every project we aim to provide safety and comfortability.
