Frequently Asked Questions

Will I get an Ministry of Transportation (MTO) certificate to apply for an insurance discount, and take my driving test 4 months earlier if I attend your driving school?

Students who have successfully completed all components of the course, within one year of the course start date, will be certified on-line by Lake Simcoe School of Motoring.

Certification was changed by the MTO in the fall of 2008. Students who enrolled in a Beginner Driver Education Program (BDE) on or after September 29, 2008 will not be issued a paper certificate from the driving school. Students wanting proof of course completion for possible insurance discounts will need to obtain their Driver Licence History Search for Proof of Beginner Driver Education Course Completion. This is done by request through the ministry at any MTO licence office. The Driver Licence History Search can only be requested by the licence holder, as it contains personal information. A separate application must be completed and signed by each applicant. The MTO charges $12.00 for the search.

Will I get an insurance discount if I attend your driving school?

The Driver’s License History provides proof of a successful completion of and graduation from a BDE course and is widely recognized by the insurance industry as proof of course completion. As an approved BDE course provider, our BDE graduates with a Driver’s License History may be eligible for an insurance discount. Contact your insurance provider for more information. To obtain the Driver’s License History go to any ServiceOntario location and request the search.

Where do we go driving? Will you pick me up?

Depending on the course package you choose, we can be driving in various environments. We offer basic packages, driving primarily in Keswick, Sutton or Beaverton areas, up to premium packages where you will be going to higher traffic areas such as Newmarket, Lindsay, or Orillia. We also offer lessons on freeway driving and emergency manoeuvres.

We strive to be the most convenient of the driving schools by picking you up where you are. Depending on the course package you choose and where you live, we could pick you up at home, school, work etc. Otherwise a pickup location will be agreed upon between you and your instructor. Note that any change in pickup or drop off needs to be agreed upon between you and your instructor. Any changes need to be made in advance to be able to plan travel time to other students. We ask that you give us 24 hours notice for any changes, if at all possible, especially if you contact the office, in order for us to get the messages to the appropriate instructor. Obviously if it is an emergency, we understand. Otherwise you may be required to pay a missed lesson fee. Contact us if you require more information.

Can I take my lessons privately? I would feel uncomfortable in the car if my friends from school are sitting in the rear seat.

Yes, all our lessons are private with just you and the instructor in the car.

I will be unable to make a session in the classroom. Will that be a problem?

No. The Ministry requires that you start the course on the first lesson, however if you need to miss a session after that, you may attend that same session during another course at no cost. As long as you complete all of the required 20 hours of in class sessions at either of our classrooms, there will not be a problem.

Do I need to finish in class before I start in the car?

No. In car lessons can be scheduled after the first lesson in class, once arrangements have been made for full payment (either in full or post-dated cheques) but you must complete all classroom hours (20) and in car hours (10) within 1 year from the start date to qualify for your certificate.

How long are my in car lessons?

Lessons are scheduled individually with each student. Depending on the student’s and the instructor’s availability, as well as the student’s ability, and destination for the lesson, lessons can last anywhere between 45 minutes to 2 hours, for a combined total of 10 hours.

What are the times for the in class sessions?

The in class course sessions start at 9:00 am and end at 2:30 pm each day. There is also a half hour lunch break each day.

Any evening class sessions would start at 6:00 pm and end at 8:30 pm.

How long do I have to complete the course?

The ministry dictates that in order to be certified with them, you must complete all the in class and all the in car sessions within one calendar year from the course start date. If you do not complete within the year, you cannot be certified on-line with the MTO. You may not qualify then for an insurance discount depending on your provider. We will do our best to complete every student in the given time frame, on average most usually complete within 2 months. Some of the common reasons for not completing within the one year time frame are students frequently cancelling lessons, and not practicing with their co-drivers in between lessons.

I am paying for the course myself. Do I need to pay everything upfront?

We accept VISA, MasterCard, cheques, debit and yes cash is always good. With our easy 3-pay plan, you may pay in three (3) payments as you go, but your lessons will not be completed until payment is received in full.

Do you teach all the same things as the leading driving schools?

As a leading driving school in the area, all of our instructors are trained to teach everything that you would learn with the larger, national companies. Our premium course is designed to train students various techniques to not only learn how to drive but also to avoid all possible collisions, including head on collision avoidance, rear crash avoidance, as well as gravel shoulder drop off and recovery and how to handle the vehicle at high speed in emergencies (ABS, emergency braking and swerving).

Will there be any lessons on the freeway?

Yes, unlike other schools that restrict instructors on freeway driving (highways 404, 11, 115 etc.), we will go on and off the freeway until you are completely comfortable. We offer a wide variety of packages that are designed to teach you to drive in various situations.

Why should I choose a driving school?

There are many reasons to use a driving school. Some of the most common reasons are:

  • Opportunity to go from G1 to G2 after 8 months as opposed to 1 year.
  • You could qualify for an insurance discount. Contact your insurance provider
  • Professional up-to-date training.

What do we teach our students?

Firstly, all in-car lessons are completely private. We strive to give each and every student the best opportunity to learn skills at their own pace. We will introduce them to various skills, both in-class and in-car, including:

  • Defensive Driving Techniques
  • Emergency Manoeuvres
  • Highway / Freeway Driving
  • Gravel Shoulder Recovery
  • Head-On Collision Avoidance
  • Rear Crash Avoidance
  • Low Speed Manoeuvres, including Parallel Parking, 3-Pt Turns, Hill Parking and Parking in a Parking Spot
