MARIA CRISTINA FALLS, Iligan City
HISTORY OF MARIA CRISTINA FALLS
Maria Cristina Falls, located in Iligan City, is not only a stunning natural wonder but also a vital source of hydroelectric power for Mindanao, providing 70% of the region’s electricity. Iligan is known as the "City of Majestic Waterfalls," with over 20 waterfalls, but Maria Cristina Falls is the most famous.
According to one legend, Maria Cristina was originally the daughter of a humble fisherman and farmer from Romblon. She was abducted by soldiers of Sultan Datu Talim, who adopted her due to her extraordinary beauty. Maria Cristina grew into a beautiful maiden, and many suitors sought her hand, including Prince San-i, whom she eventually fell in love with.
However, a jealous witch who secretly loved the prince cursed Maria Cristina, vowing to stop their wedding. The night before the ceremony, Maria Cristina, in sorrow, went to a creek and cried. The witch appeared, cursing her to turn into a mountain, with her tears flowing into a river. On the wedding day, the villagers discovered a mountain weeping with tears flowing toward the sea.
The witch was never found, and in honor of Maria Cristina, the falls were named after her.
