Laboratory of Geometry

Applications for Fall 2022 will be soon available!
Grad students and post-docs: we are currently accepting applications for project proposals!

Deadline: August 5th 2022.

We are looking forward to seeing your application!

Welcome to Log(IUB)!

Welcome to Laboratory of Geometry at IU. The aim of this program is to understand a concept deeply enough so that you can so that you can tell a computer to produce meaningful pictures from which you can get further insights and conjectures. You will work in groups, with other undergraduate students, and with the help of a grad student and faculty mentor.

Format:

Students will work in a group. They will have two 1-hour meetings with their mentor every week. They are expected to put in an average of 6 hours of work per week, including the meetings. In these meetings students will report their progress and discussion will arise between mentors and mentees. The first four to six weeks will be focused on learning the basic background. After that, students will give a 15-20 minutes presentation on this material to an audience consisting of other undergraduates, the graduate student mentors and faculty advisors. Students will then focus on implementing computer programs to plot the concepts they learned. The rest of the semester will be spent with coding and analyzing the output of the codes. At the end of the semester, there will be a final poster presentation, where the students will present their findings and pictures.

Grade:

* (50%) Participation: showing up to the meeting and reporting progress, asking questions to mentors and thinking about the problems and questions that came up in previous meetings.

* (25%) Mid-term presentation:preparing and delivering a 15-20 minutes presentation on the background learned.

* (25%) Final poster session: explaining their findings to an audience that will approach them with questions related to their results and pictures.

Laboratory of Geometry will count as 2 credits of independent study S499.
