Welcome to Pedro
Vieira's Lab: LIM
LIM is a research laboratory based in the Institute of Biology at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), in Campinas-SP, Brazil.
Charles Darwin Street, Block H, First Floor.
The Laboratory of Immunometabolism investigates how metabolic processes influence immune cell function under both physiological and pathological conditions. Emerging as a frontier in biomedical research, immunometabolism bridges traditionally distinct disciplines—metabolism and immunology—to explore how interactions between metabolic and immune systems contribute to diseases such as obesity-induced diabetes, cancer, autoimmune disorders, parasitic and bacterial infections. The lab aims to identify novel therapeutic targets by elucidating the biochemical pathways that regulate immune responses.
Immunometabolism
Study of how metabolic pathways influence immune cell functions in health and disease.
Immunoregulation
Investigation of the mechanisms that control immune responses, particularly in chronic inflammatory conditions.
Macrophage Immunobiology
Analysis of tissue-resident macrophages and their role in maintaining tissue homeostasis and responding to metabolic changes.
Our lab is led by Prof. Dr. Pedro Manoel Mendes de Moraes Vieira, a faculty member at the Institute of Biology, University of Campinas (IB/Unicamp) and also Graduate Supervisor at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences, University of São Paulo (ICB-USP). With a strong academic background in immunology and metabolism during his doctorate with Prof. Dr. Niels Olsen at ICB-USP — and postdoctoral experience with Prof. Dr. Barbara Kahn at Harvard Medical School — Professor Pedro leads cutting-edge research at the intersection of immune system function and metabolism with a strong network of collaboration all over the world.
In 2019, he was the only latin american researcher nominated for the HelDi Award on diabetes research by Helmhotlz/Germany. In 2020, he secured a significant grant from FAPESP, which enabled the acquisition of various supplies and equipments, as well as the publication of our paper on COVID-19/obesity, and HIF-1α in macrophages, in two months.

Celia Bresil holds a degree in Biological Sciences from the Pontifical Catholic University of Campinas (PUC-Campinas). She has been a biologist at UNICAMP since 1997 and has been working with LIM since 2019. Celia is the heart of the lab — nothing runs smoothly without her.

Along with postdoctoral researchers, our team includes Master's and Doctoral students from the Graduate Program in Genetics and Molecular Biology (Subarea Immunology) at the Institute of Biology, State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), as well as from the Graduate Program in Immunology at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences, University of São Paulo (USP). Although the lab is based at UNICAMP, our head, Pedro, is also a visiting professor at USP. In this context, students can choose which university they wish to take courses at, but all experiments are conducted at LIM, UNICAMP. Check the Calls for Applications by clicking the logos below:
