Many people think farming is a calm and simple life. They imagine animals, nature, and family farms.  

But today, this is not the reality. Farming is becoming very expensive, and farmers are struggling to make money.  

As a student in agricultural technique and someone who works and lives on a farm, I see this problem every day. The difference between costs and profits is making farming very difficult. 

First, the cost of farming is rising quickly. Farmers have to pay for tractors, machinery, fuel, feed, and fertilizers. These things are essential, but they are very expensive. At the same time, the money farmers earn from selling their products does not increase as much, because when products are too expensive, the society doesn’twant to buy them. Do you see the problem here? According to the Government of Québec (2026), farm expenses are increasing and financial pressure is growing. Even if farms generate revenue, higher costs and debt reduce profits. 

To better explain this situation, I did a short interview with Chat GPT, an artificial intelligence developed by OpenAI. I asked about the difference between equipment prices and farmers’ profits to see if the problem was that serious. Chat GPT explained, “Farm equipment is very expensive and prices continue to rise, while farmers’ profits often stay low or unstable” (Chat GPT interview, April 2026). It also said that “this creates a gap where farmers have high costs but limited income” (Chat GPT interview, April 2026).  

From my personal experience on my family farm, I can confirm that this is real. Buying equipment or repairing machines costs a lot of money. Sometimes, even after a good production year, the profits are small because expenses are so high. This situation is stressful and discouraging. Many young people see this and decide not to become farmers, because buying a farm is practically impossible. 

This problem is not only about farmers. It affects everyone. If farmers don’t make enough money, not many people will choose this job. This can reduce food production and increase prices. Society depends on farmers every day and they don’t even realize it. Supporting them is important. Buying local products and improving financial support programs can help farmers survive. 

In conclusion, farming is becoming too expensive. Prices are increasing, but profits are not. This creates a difficult situation for farmers, especially for the young ones. If we want a strong future in agriculture, we must help farmers today. Without support, few people will choose this essential and so beautiful profession.
