Today, artificial intelligence is becoming more present in the music industry. 

From generating melodies to mixing tracks, AI tools are changing the way music is created. This rapid evolution raises an important question: can AI replace sound engineers? As a student in sound technology, this issue directly concerns my future career.  

AI will not replace sound engineers, but it will transform their role and require new skills. 

First, the impact of AI on creative work has already been studied by researchers. In Artists and Creative Work in the Age of AI (2025), the authors explain that artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly capable of producing artistic content such as music, images, and writing. 

They also highlight the economic risks for creators, as AI-generated content is faster and cheaper to produce, which could reduce opportunities for human artists. Additionally, the article raises ethical concerns about AI systems being trained on existing artwork without the consent of creators. However, the authors insist that AI lacks human emotion, intention, and personal experience, which are essential elements in meaningful artistic creation. This reinforces the idea that, although AI can assist in technical processes, it cannot replace the creative judgment and sensitivity of a sound engineer. 

In addition, I interviewed Pierre Duchesne, a studio teacher at Collège d’Alma and professional sound engineer with experience as a musician, producer, and studio owner. He explained that sound engineering is a creative and multifaceted profession, especially in the mixing stage, where the goal is to understand the artist’s vision and enhance it through artistic choices. According to him, “AI is based on existing data, so it cannot truly be creative.” He also emphasized that mixing is an artisanal process that can highlight imperfections to create a unique sound, something AI cannot replicate with precision. This perspective shows that human creativity and sensitivity remain essential in sound engineering. He also advises students to trust their ears and develop their creativity, even if it means going against conventions. 

AI represents both an opportunity and a challenge for future sound engineers. On one hand, it can simplify technical tasks and improve efficiency in the studio. On the other hand, it forces professionals to adapt and develop new skills to stay relevant in a rapidly evolving industry. As a student in sound technology, I believe it is important to learn how to use these tools while also developing a strong artistic identity. Creativity, emotion, and human interaction are qualities that AI cannot reproduce, and they will remain essential in the future of sound engineering. 

In conclusion, artificial intelligence is reshaping the field of sound engineering, but it is not replacing it. While AI can improve efficiency and automate certain tasks, it cannot replicate human creativity and artistic vision. Sound engineers must adapt to these changes by learning how to use AI as a tool rather than seeing it as a threat.  

Ultimately, the future of industry will depend on finding the right balance between technology and human creativity.
