Area 52

Aquatic Molecular Ecology and Conservation Genetics

Welcome to Area 52!

From salmon to prawns and insects to elephants, we employ new molecular techniques and develop novel genetic tools to further the fields of molecular ecology and conservation genetics. With our expertise in methods of non-invasive DNA sampling (e.g. eDNA and non-invasive sampling), ecology, population genetics, metabarcoding and bioinformatics, we focus our research largely on the fauna of marine and freshwater habitats, but also, with our international collaborators we have put our skills to work on terrestrial mammals and insects in Kenya.

Based in the School of Biology and Environmental Science and Earth Institute in University College Dublin, we have access to state of the state-of-the-arts facilities that allow us to undertake ambitious and cutting edge research.

Who works in Area 52, you ask? A bunch of wonderfully dedicated people!
