Mack Dryden, originally from Mississippi, now makes his home in Louisville, KY. His craft work in wood involves the re-use of driftwood and re-purposing or reclaiming of barn wood to build tables and other furniture. BUT! His principal occupation is as a powerful and highly-respected comedian and motivational speaker; numerous references and links to his humorous performances can be found on his website at www.mackdryden.com.
He describes the way he balances his occupation and his craft avocation in these words:
"There’s something infinitely fascinating about using a handful of tools to transform a few sticks into something beautiful that no one’s ever seen before. And when people react emotionally to what you’ve created, it’s as thrilling and gratifying as making a thousand people laugh–which, as it turns out, I know something about as well. As a professional comedian and speaker for many years, I’ve appeared in quite a few well-known American TV shows, and (when not quarantined in lockdown) I fly all over the country performing. But as soon as I get home from the airport and reconnect with my dear, supportive wife Teri, I head to the shop to “make sawdust.”
In the images shown below, one can get a sense of his craft skills and his approach to using the driftwood he gathers along the Ohio River near Louisville. He transforms that material into chandeliers (often commissioned work) and also into ornamental hangings and artful decor...
In addition to his driftwood chandeliers and ornamental decor, Mack Dryden also reclaims wood from old barns and trees to create lovely rustic tables; some such pieces of his are available at KORE Art Gallery in Louisville:
Here is a 2½-minute YouTube video showing Dryden's use of a blown-down 1840s barn to create the table shown above in front of a fireplace — and several others...
