"Bespoke" means something is custom-made, or made-to-order for a specific person or purpose, unlike mass-produced items. Alisha Martin and her helpers at The Bad Button create a wide variety of both "custom corsets" and "bespoke corsets."
Corsets are support garments worn to constrict the torso into the desired shape and posture. They are traditionally constructed out of fabric with boning made of whalebone or steel, a stiff panel in the front called a busk which holds the torso rigidly upright, and some form of lacing which allows the garment to be tightened.
Alisha Martin's background began with undergrad work in forensic anthropology and archaeology, followed by graduate work in historic preservation and museum studies. She spent eight years working in museums (where she first encountered antique corsets). She is a recipient of the Kentucky Arts Council’s Folk and Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Grant as a Master Artist, and is an adjudicated member of the Kentucky Crafted Program.
A longtime collector of buttons, her company's name came from a friend calling her (in jest) "a bad button!" She founded The Bad Button Bespoke Corsets in 2010 after creating her own corsets beginning around 2005...
Below are a few examples of the many styles of corsets (and other items, including jewelry, purses, and accessories) offered by The Bad Button Bespoke Corsets. Many more can be seen on Martin's Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram pages!
