On the 14th July 2019 we paid our second visit to Brass at the Seaside in St. Anns. Fortunately this year, both the weather and venue were kinder to us. Whilst it was a nice warm day we didn't have the baking unrelenting sun of last year. This year we were also playing on the bandstand by the pier which of course has a roof. We had a good sized audience and the sound carried well along the seafront and even down onto the beach.

Set List:

  • How to Train Your Dragon
  • Hallelujah
  • Queen (medley)
  • Crocodile Rock
  • King of Pop (Michael Jackson medley)
  • African Funk
  • Birdland
  • Moana
  • Feel it Still

Below is a link to a video of our rehearsal of 'How to Train Your Dragon'.

The Annual Band Awards Night occurred on 5th July 2019 at St. John's Fisher Church in Kearsley. Both the Main Band and Training Band performed a number of pieces in front of the Mayor of Bolton and a packed audience. During the evening Mark explained to everybody what an honour it was that Kearsley Youth Brass Band had been granted the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service. This is in recognition of all of the volunteers' hard work, and the contribution that we as a band make to the wider community.

Congratulations to all of our award winners and Good Luck to all of you that are doing your grade exams next week.

On the 5th May 2019 we played at The Party in the Park in Farnworth Park, a community event with stalls, attractions and live entertainment. Both the Training Band and Main Band played and we had a 'Prize Every Time Raffle Stall'. It was the first opportunity for the Main Band to show off some new material in front of the public.

Christmas was, as usual, a very busy time for The Band. We played a full concert of Christmas Music at Kearsley Mount Methodist Church as part of our Christmas Fair and were also invited to play at three local Christmas Light Switch On Events (Farnworth Christmas Tree, The Grapes' Christmas Tree and Luke Whittaker's Family Home). The Swinton Branch of the W.I. invited us to play at their Christmas Party. Two lengthy Carol Sessions at local supermarkets, another at Spindle Point Christmas Tree Farm and numerous tours of our community throughout December. We'd like to say a big thank-you to all the venues that allowed us to play and to all the people that have supported us throughout 2018. We wish you all a Happy New Year.

Sunday 24th September 2018 - the band had a busy afternoon playing several venues around the community starting at lunch time playing in front of The Mayor of Bolton at Kearsley Mount Methodist Church and finishing off by the clock tower at St. Saviour's Church in Ringley as part of the Kearsley Scarecrow Festival. This photographer caught up with them at their final set of the day by the clock tower with a gallery showing them setting up, playing and a number of the adults 'relaxing' afterwards, on what turned out to be a nice very sunny and warm day despite the Met-Office issuing a forecast of doom just a couple of days previously.

Set list:

The Floral Dance

The Dingle Dangle Scarecrow.

Singing in the Rain

If I Only Had a Brain

Since the band formed 9 years ago ( In 2010) they have played only on a couple of brief occasions outside of the boundaries of The Borough of Bolton, until now...

The August Bank Holiday Weekend saw the band heading off for Anglesey where a number of concerts had been planned. We played alongside Penrhyn Male Voice Choir, Beaumaris Town Band and were privileged to play on the Royal Dais at Caernarfon Castle. As busy as the band were there was also time for a bit of fun on the beach as can be seen from this photo gallery.

Sunday 15th July 2018 had the band travel a little further afield than the norm. We shared the stage at Ashton Gardens, St. Ann's with Astley Unlimited and Astley Youth Band, for an afternoon of entertainment as part of the Brass at the Seaside Festival. The Stage, which should have been immediately in front of the beautiful 'Figure of Peace' war memorial was hastily moved 50 yards to be under the shade of a large well placed tree. The Sun beat down unrelentingly for the whole day with not a cloud in the sky.

A number of our players also play for Astley so you may notice in the photos a bit of T-Shirt swapping going on, and indeed the occasional red shirt amongst the purple where we 'borrowed' players to fill a couple of gaps. A big thank you to 'the deps' for standing in.

Set list:

  • Prismatic Light
  • Highland Cathedral
  • Abide With Me
  • Pixar Movie Magic
  • MyFanwy
  • Walking of Sunshine
  • One Moment in Time

Who would have thought that being Principal Cornet was so exhausting? (and this was before we had even started...)

Friday 6th July 2018 saw a packed out St. John's Fisher Church in Kearsley for the band's annual awards night. Present was The Mayor and The Deputy Mayoress of Bolton, Councillors and some long standing and well respected players and supporters of brass banding.

Awards:

  • Reemer Bailey Award - Elliot
  • The Tonge Trophy - Nellie
  • The Bolton at Home Award - Callum
  • KYBB Most Promising Player - Nathan
  • Jack Peers Trophy - Hannah
  • KYBB Chairman's Shield - Emily
  • The Higginbottom Family Award - Elliot
  • Musical Director's Award for Most Improved Adult - Claire
  • The Linda Kearney Memorial Trophy - Marie
  • The Harrison Prize - The Hall Family
  • The Shirley Holmes Memorial Trophy - Daniel

And a big congratulations to all of those that attained their Grade Exam from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. Far too many people to mention them all individually, but there were a liberal scattering of Merits and Distinctions for a whole variety of instruments. Well Done!

Tuesday 27th March 2018 a Concert and Fundraising Evening for the local community

On Sunday 18th March 2018 the band played at St. Stephens Kearsley. A selection of hymns and some traditional 'mining themed' brass band music to commemorate the 140th Anniversary of the Unity Brook Pit Disaster where 43 people lost their lives. Due to the service being a 'full house' we also arranged to have it beamed live by 'microwave link' across the road to Kearsley Mount Methodist Church where another hundred or so people were able to watch live on the big screen.

On Friday 2nd February 2018 the band's MDs and Tutors paid a visit to St Saviour's School to deliver a recruitment session. All the children seemed to enjoy themselves watching and listening to the demonstrations of all the various instruments that we took along.

The evening of Friday 15th December 2017 had the band doing a grand tour of Clifton and Kearsley. Starting at the Golden Lion we then visited the Unity Brook, The Black Horse, La Roma and The Horse Shoe playing a selection of traditional Christmas Carols. We'd like to thank everyone for their support and wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas. Here is a photo of some very enthusiastic members of the audience at the Horse Shoe. There is just one opportunity left to see/hear the band in action before Christmas and that is at Farnworth Tesco on Sunday the 17th.

Sunday 10/12/2017 the band played in the afternoon at the Christmas Tree Farm near Spindle Point, Kearsley. Whilst we didn't wake up to the thick covering of snow that I had hoped for, so as I could get that perfect chocolate box snow scene photo, we did have a really nice, if cold, time playing two sessions and covering a wide range of Traditional Carols and other Christmas Music.

Caitlin is a 'Star', so says the perfectly formed 6 pointed snowflake that landed on her head just as I hit the shutter release. Mark literally seemed to take the first half as a warm up and conducted all of the second half just in his T-Shirt, tough or barmy? You decide!

Christina (Miss Farnworth and Kearsley) came along too and stayed to have a listen for a while, nice to see her.

The evening of Thursday 7th December 2017 saw the band perform at St Saviour's Church, Ringley for the W.I. Christmas Party. Occasionally, especially when we are really busy such as now, not everybody can be available all of the time so a special thanks to Nikki, Jenny, Simon, Kate, Val, Michelle and Ian for making up the numbers and helping us to turn out a full band.

A very busy period for the band, a whole day (3rd December 2017) at Tesco, Walkden entertaining the shoppers. A whole range of Christmas Music and Traditional Carols were played, in fact the whole Christmas Repertoire from the four Christmas Themed Concerts below. A video of the band playing Winter Wonderland is available on the 'Downloads and Links' page (apologies for the few out of focus seconds - but to quote Danny in Brassed Off, "It's the music that matters").

On the evening of Friday 1st December 2017 the band played a series of mini Carol Concerts at several venues around Ringley and Prestolee. We started off playing a wide range of Christmas Music at the 'Christmas Light Switch On' in memory of Luke Whittaker. We then moved on to play traditional carols at 'The Grapes' for their Christmas Light Switch On event, where the band bumped into Santa and a couple of his Elves. We then 'gatecrashed' - perhaps we were invited???? - the Parishioners Christmas Party at Holy Trinity Church, Prestolee, where we did a 'requests session' and then finished off doing similar at 'La Roma' and 'The Horse Shoe'. All good fun on a freezing cold night! On the 'Gallery' page there are a couple of photos of a couple of our young players having a go at Conducting, by the look on one of their faces it perhaps Isn't quite as easy as they thought.

In no particular order a list of the music we got through on this evening:

The band operates broadly in line with the local academic school year so on Tuesday 3rd October, just four weeks after returning from the summer break, we held a free concert at our rehearsal hall for the local community. Mark is slowly cranking up the technicality of the music we play. It's great learning for the whole band and helps everybody to improve.

Jackie perhaps thought she'd got away with it but found herself conducting the next number.
