I am trying to install a windows server 2012 on a KVM. The host system is Ubuntu Server 14.04. I would like to use a logical volume, say /dev/VG/win, as main device for the guest system. However, the installation process stops at the point where I choose the drive. No drive is found and I am asked to choose a (signed) driver. I tried several driver images but have found none so far that works. If I use an image file for the guest system, everything works fine.

There is one other possibility actually. I run a SoundBlaster X-Fi Fatality Champion edition at home hooked up to 7.1 Soundblaster surround sound speakers. When the sound card initiates when the computer turns on, I get an almighty crack which is also detected in the volume mixer. Like a sudden release of static build up, that sort of crack. Anyway, now I think about it, it hasn't happened since I updated the audio drivers in windows 7. They released one's compatible with windows 8 recently. Apparently the only change was to make it windows 8 compatible, but the problem I was having with the front panel for volume control are fixed and the cracking has stopped, so you might just want to update your drivers. Do a full uninstall first rather than an upgrade install.

When this feature is enabled, application windows will behave in much more helpful and logical manner (as compared to Windows 10) in that applications will return to their original positions on external displays when those displays are reconnected.

Okay got the VM up and running and I was able to use TightVnc to access and install Windows 8 but after installation is complete I have no network connectivity inside the windows VM. Any help is appreciated, XML below

You'll also need to be running a windows insider build of Windows 10. The insiders Fast ring which is mentioned in the pre-requisites is now the Dev channel. One of the features required didn't come into Windows 10 until build 19619 and the nested virtualisation support for AMD didn't come in until build 19636 either, so that's a must if you are on AMD too. The windows insider page currently lists 19042.423 as the highest build available in Beta and 19041.423 as Release Preview, so for the moment this will not work correctly without using the Dev channel.

Once nested KVM is up and running and you've configured WSL to send X output to windows, you are ready to try a distro. If you keep following the post at this point you'll set up an Ubuntu 20.10 daily build. I ran through this as a check to see if everything was working, the steps for this were exactly the same as in the post.

I'm sharing this here because I think anyone doing this now will encounter these troubles, and I've sunk a lot time into trying harebrained fixes (classic Linux-hole wasting-time pattern) to no avail. I've posted a question on Reddit that's gotten some up-votes already (UPDATE: my posts were yanked for "too little information" provided, so I can't recommend these Reddit forums) (reddit.com/r/bashonubuntuonwindows...) that includes a link to a more detailed post on r/hackintosh that looks like it's unlisted, IOW waiting for mod approval that may never come.

It seems that the dev channel is locked into wanting to upgrade to windows 11. And I haven't found a way to get access to previous dev channel windows builds otherwise. It seems I need at least the old dev channel build 19619 iso to get past kvm-ok. My system is stuck on 19044, and doesn't support upgrading to windows 11 because of the TPM requirement. Thoughts?

I recently tried the upgrade to Fedora 39. Almost everything works fine, except when trying to boot a windows virtual machine with libvirt. When I try to start an old windows vm image or create a new one, the screen of the vm just stays black. I do not even get the tianocore logo when booting the vm. Note that I can create a Fedora 38 vm just fine, the issue only seems to affect windows virtual machines. Any suggestions of how to fix this problem?

The problem occurs on both of my machines where I have tried Fedora 39.

Thanks, though I think the issue here is different. The issue here seems to be affecting any vm when using UEFI with secureboot, regardless if it is a windows vm or a Fedora vm. When selecting UEFI without secureboot in libvirt, then everything seems to work. edk2-ovmf update is being worked on to fix this, in the mean time the copr works great.

Hi, i recently created a windows kvm and i noticed that even after alloting all of my cpy cores it only showed 1 core in the kvm, i tried updating re creating and even trying diffrent versions or even stripped down versions like atlas os, but nothing changed, even in atlas os it was only showing 2 cores

NOTE: the windows in the kvm is not activated but i doubt that has to do with my cores not getting used

yes thx i already figured it out but i had one more isuue i cant install my drivers, i use amd cpu, it shows i dont have compatible hardware, also u mentioned 6 sockets, that wont work as windows normally only alows 1 or 2 sockets so it should be 1 socket 2 threads, 6 cores in thr topology

and without the drivers the overall experience is very laggy

I have a debian machine which I installed proxmox onto. I have been having trouble getting one of my guest machines (specifically a windows guest) to achieve a resolution of 1366x768. The solution in this post didn't work for me.

Before you spend any more time on this, are you aware that Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0 and thus running it in a VM requires encryption and some additional setup? Is there a hotkey that will switch me back to the primary computer while I'm viewing the secondary computer in KVM mode? So I don't have to mouse up to the top of the screen, etc?

Or even a hotkey that changes the keyboard focus to the primary computer so, e.g., ALT-TAB cycles through windows on the primary instead of the secondary?

All in KVM mode?

Control options include the front panel, a built-in web interface and third-party control via Telnet and RS-232. The front panel and web interface are remarkably easy to use, enabling audio, video input and layout selection. Simply select a pre-set or customizable layout, select inputs, and route inputs to the desired display windows. 2351a5e196
