Digital art allows people of all ages to explore art in many different ways and allows artists to go "beyond the borders" to allow people all over the world to explore and view their work. Yayoi Kusama is a Japanese artist. Born in Matsumoto, Japan in 1929, she became known as "the princess of polka dots". Kusama was known as an "obsessional artist" due to her extensive use of dots in her artwork. Kusama has always been open about her life and her mental health with her hallucinations starting as young as childhood. These hallucinations incorporated dots, which inspired much of her artwork. A common theme in Kusama's artwork was sexual anxiety as well as identity, sexuality, and the body. The dots within her pieces of art allowed her viewers to experience the feeling of self obliteration, like she did. In 1973, Kusama moved back to Japan from the United States and in 1977 she moved into a mental hosptital where she continued to produce art for her viewers. Kusama is an inspirational artist to me because she was very into and open with her mental health and showed people that she could still pursue her work, even from a mental hospital. Still to this day, Kusama is famous for her dot works, pop art, contemporary art, and conceptual art; even after everything that she has been through.
I created this piece of art based on pieces created by Yayoi Kusama. I used circles and dots to create this piece of art, which inspired much of Kusama's work. I just created whatever came to my head and then repeated it onto both sides of the paper. I repeated it to resemble Kusama's infinity mirrors and how they never end, like this piece of art.
