Food for the Soul and Mono were both unfortunately pushed to my PTW list due to lack of time.
I binged all of Uma Museum Cinderella Grey after the season had ended because the mobile game came out. So its not included here.
Starting off the season strong with an hour long first episode is Sword of the Demon Hunter. During the first half of the episode its hard not to draw parallels to Demon Slayer. A boys sister becomes part demon, he becomes a demon slayer, and he protects her. As the episode progresses into its later acts, the greater plot comes into view. A tragedy about betrayal and finding purpose. This anime is a fantasy set in Japan, that spans all the way from the Edo era to modern times. The animation is really nice, and has voice actors and ost to match. I did feel like the action scenes were a bit lacking, and sometimes there's this odd camera wobble effect. Overall its definitely worth checking out, I tried not to reveal too much in this review. 8/10.
On her seventeenth birthday, a witch's apprentice is told she has one year left to live. She's contracted a death sentence curse. The only way to prevent herself from dying, is to create a seed of life made from one thousand tears of pure joy. So she sets out to try and collect them. This anime is very strange as the plot is very weak, yet it constantly makes failed attempts at comedy. The art style is rather boring, and overall everything is subpar. Probably watchable, but not worth the time. 4/10.
This is a seinen slice of life series, mainly featuring a girl selling beer at a baseball stadium. Her interactions with customers are the main draw, but the show tries to feature all regular activity at a stadium. Like the security guard helping a lost child. Its entertaining, heart warming, relatable, and funny. The ending theme animation is super cute and features a dance. This is slice of life done right. 7/10.
This is a sci-fi detective anime that seems to have been hyped up a bit. There are androids that look and act like people, and programed to never harm humans. One of these androids suddenly attacks someone. Our mc is a cyber investigator who with the help of her own android partner dives into peoples recorded memories to try and solve cases. The concept is cool, and the animation is nice. Not usually a fan of these types of shows, and there was a lot of info dump, but it has potential. 7/10.
This is an ecchi anime. The number one girl in the school as an ability that lets her undo anything that's happened when she takes off her undergarments. A boy catches her changing and gains the ability to remember the things she undoes. Due to him being exempt, she forces him to become her closet and carry around underwear for her power. Yeah this is straight ass. None of the characters are likeable, the animation is awful, the plot is non existent, and the girls face is drawn terribly. 3/10.
Airing for twenty four episodes, this title has been hyped up for years by fans of the source material. An all powerful king of a future civilization dies, and find himself reborn as an infant. Somehow with all his memories intact, he finds himself in a world of swords and magic. The animation is the epitome of average, and the writing a bit cheesy. So far it seems like a much much much worse nock off of Mushuku Tensei. You can't really go wrong with fantasy isekai, but its nothing special either. 5/10.
In a town made great by healers, there's one that's unlicensed. His harem is introduced about four minutes into the show, and of course, hes also the strongest. For such a generic show the fight animation was actually quite good, and the characters are enjoyable enough. An underground healer making a life for himself in a fantasy world. 5/10.
Fire Force is finally back after a long wait with its third season. No time was wasted as it seems to have jumped right back into the action, continuing on from where it left off. In the first episode they've already gotten the ball rolling with some huge twists. You can count on a certain someone's clothes falling off, bass boosted fire sound effects, and lots of flames. The ending has a neat animation style. Latom. 7/10.
A school comedy love triangle. A boy has a passion for making and selling flower accessories, but was a terrible salesman. A girl talks to him one day and decides to help him out. Now having been best friends for years, she jokes that once they're thirty if he doesn't find a girlfriend they'll get married. Then In the hallway one day, he meets a girl wearing one of his accessories. The animation is nice, but some people might find the characters personalities annoying. I also had some of my concerns for this show validated by a very reliable source. Could be fine, but proceed with caution. 5/10.
I believe this is adapted from a live action show? Basically a girl from a powerful family is a detective. The art style is unique and gives some intrigue, but everything else including the attempts at comedy fall flat. Nothing stands out, and the mysteries are uninteresting. Not offensive but nothing captivating. 4/10.
I watched the first season of this because Aoi Yuuki voices the protagonist, and it turned out to be such a chill comfort anime. An immortal forever seventeen year old witch hangs out with her found family and occasionally visits the nearby village. The animation studio changed, and its been four years. Its a bit worse then its prequel, but at its core I'm glad to report it continues to be a wholesome chill slice of life. 6/10.
I've heard a lot of people in the Symphogear space talk about this show, so I was excited to give it a try. There's a website that has a secret, girls can use it to enter a world where they can sing and dance freely. They put on idol shows for each other here. Suddenly a bad guy appears that summons monsters with a guitar, and some of the idols transform into princess dresses to sing and fight them. I was very underwhelmed. The music was probably the highlight if I was forced to chose something, but things like the art style, writing, and backgrounds were insanely lacking. Apparently a four cour anime, I don't know how they're going to fill the air time lol. Maybe good for pre-teen girls. 5/10.
A man spoken of in whispers as the backwater sword master has trained many legends in the combat world. One day one of his former students returns to the small town, after becoming the leader of the knights. She gives him a job offer to be a special instructor and he hesitantly moves to the city. Thinking nothing of his own skills, hes doubtful hes in the right place. This anime is similar to some that have come before, but manages to still execute on the basic premise well. The fight animation uses 3D underneath, but its hidden well enough to not be noticeable. Looking to be a fun basic anime. 5/10.
There's some real fishy stuff going on here. Future retro mystery romance. This story takes place in the future, where some people chose to live in town that's very nostalgic to the 80s way of life. A romance plot is taking place between our two 30 year old protagonists who work at a realty business. Set in front of the ominous backdrop, a pharmaceutical company's eye drops miraculously restore her vision, the government is building something in the sky, restaurants disappear, and she discovers herself in pictures she has no memory of. This anime leverages unique stylistic choices to lean into its themes, and ends up being a very unique experience. I have no idea where this will go, and that's very exciting. Potential to score higher, but for now- 8/10.
I mean... its just another adaptation of Anne of Green Gables. Bonus points for being Canadian. The animation is very soft and child friendly, and its set to be airing for a solid twenty four episodes. Should have plenty of time to adapt the story. Nothing wrong with it. 6/10.
This is another of the most hype anime of the season. As an quick aside I got insane deja-vu watching this episode, as I swear a clip of it was semi viral like a year ago. A genius scientist created a cheap, side effect free, perfect, pain killer. Humanity was all hooked on taking it while the creator disappeared. Three years later the creator resurfaces with a video, announcing that the drug was a trap all along and will mutate to kill everyone that's taken it in thirty days. The only way to get the antidote was to find him. A team is assembled to find the man, and they recruit a criminal parkour man from a panopticon prison. About 90% of the episode is running shots of a gun doing parkour in a futuristic American city, so that's cool I guess. Very action heavy. The big downside is that MAPPA are animating this, so a lot of stuff like cars and some scenes also look like garbage. The doctor trying to kill everyone also has like no real motive, but this is semi suicide squad so I'm sure it'll be popular. 6/10.
18+ comedy romance ecchi. 10 minute episodes where nothing actually happens since its still just a regular anime. Mc likes robots, finds out a girl in his class is a sex robot. She gets broken in an explosion, he fixes her up. Honestly the animation is kinda unappealing, and none of the characters are likeable. Its very whatever. 3/10.
Set to air for 26 episodes. A witch returns from her holy land having finally finished training and in need of a familiar. She choses her childhood friend that always protected her when they were younger, and also happens to be an Oni. They end up living alone together. She's trying to help people with her magic, and hes trying to protect her. I'd classify this primarily comedy, and pseudo romance. The plot sounds similar to the familiar of zero, but both are very different. Her spells seem to have lots of unexpected sideeffects which lead to fun situations. I think theres good potential, Animation is also very nice. The ending theme is done by Yoasobi, and the animation for that is also super cute. I'm going to aim high with this score, but I think it can reach it. 8/10.
When you turn 16 you get chosen by an animal god. If you're chosen by a bird god you can grow wings, if you're chosen by a chameleon you might succeed in the fashion industry. Our girl got chosen by the exceptionally rare gorilla god, which much to her dismay is the best for combat. This is a pretty fun anime all things considered. Skinny girl has monkey powers and becomes a knight. It also smella a bit like a reverse harem anime, so thats something to look out for. Animation is very plain but it works. 6/10.
Its a supernatural slice of life romance. Always a pleasant blend when these genres intersect. A boy moved to an island for the summer to help his relative sort through his recently deceased grandmothers exotic belongings. On this island he meets a girl trying to learn to swim at night. The visuals are great, and every single cast member is extremely likeable. An underappreciated detail is just how good they use the OST to create atmosphere. Only good vibes from this first episode, I expect great things. 8/10.
A young manga artist has three drafts rejected in the same day. Inspired by travel tv shows and the feeling of wanting to just go on a journey, she decides to set off on a trip the next day. Theres been a recent trend of japanese tourism propaganda anime, and this is one of them. That said, I do happen to like Japan, so its fun to see all the real life places being explored. The style is nice, the desire to travel relatable, and the places interesting. 7/10.
A spin off series from My Hero Academia, that takes place before the events of the main series. We see hero's like All Might and Eraser head in their prime. Three losers with quirks too weak to be real hero's, take it upon themselves to be illegal vigilantes and crack down on a power enhancing street drug named Trigger. Produced by studio Bones with a lot of comic book inspiration, this spin off looks and feels very different from regular the regular My Hero series. I had never even heard of this until I saw a controversy over Pop Step's outfit being censored in the anime compared to the manga. She's probably why most people will watch this anyways. If you've ever liked My Hero, or even just super hero's in general this seems worth a try. 7/10.
A super rich family has seven children, two boys and five girls. Our protagonist is the eldest son, the family heir, who is having some trouble with love and musing about destiny. Living with five high school girls has all the elements of a harem rom com, except they're all still siblings. That is until their father reveals they're all actually adopted and not blood related. This is tagged as a rom-com, but also surprisingly a seinen which I can see reflected in some of the dialogue choices. The character design and animation itself is quite nice. All that said, this will one hundred percent be slop a la domestic girlfriend, so if you're not a raccoon beware. 6/10.
I was not expecting a second season for this to come out so soon. Its technically in the super sentai genre but doesn't feel like it at all. The in universe Power Rangers enslaved the monsters and fight them in a public show every week. A mob that's sick of dying and taking orders decides to infiltrate the rangers to kill both the rangers and the boss monsters. The animation and story are nice like before. They get creative with some segments in the intros and eds, like involving puppets of the villains. Very engaging watch and definitely holds up. 7/10.
This is listed as a fantasy romance anime, but to me it feels like its missing a shojo tag. Every kingdom needs to have a saint to bestow blessings and protect the people from monsters. The worlds strongest saint was perfect in every way, except she never smiled and was dull. She was engaged to the prince, but he decided he liked her sister more. Sold off to a new kingdom, it seems their prince will treat her with kindness. The art is nice, but I noticed often the actual animation was minimal. Slow pans, and zooms are very common. That said with such a simple plot and setting not much can really go wrong. 6/10.
A comedy slice of life that packs a surprising amount of action. The plot is simple, a failure of a runaway ninja gets saved by a blunt assassin. The two decide to work together to go up in the assassin rankings while balancing elements of a normal life. This show is remarkably simple while landing lots of dry humor. It's right up my alley and I laughed a lot from this first episode. There's always the question with comedy anime if the gimmick will hold up over the season's run, and I think this one will since the main draw is the characters dynamic and not so much the assassin bit. Lowballing a 7/10.
