Reza Nadimi's Testimonial

Doubtlessly, my PhD period at Tokyo Institute of Technology (Titech) was among the best years of my educational life. I was challenged to pursue my dreams in energy studies, through attending in various energy related-classes at Titech and Tokimatsu lab with diverse technical backgrounds, ideas, and thoughts. Techno-economic, socio-economic, and environmental risk analysis are three pillars of the Lab, to reach an integrated assessment energy system.

Lab members define their own research plans in line with these pillars and conduct their projects. Communications between lab members are increased by extension the overlapping of defined projects. My personal experience about communication backed into a project in which I myself with energy economic study get involved with social study. The result of this cooperation improved my knowledge in socio-economic aspect of the lab project, which was very brilliant experience. Apart of scientific discussion, lab members enjoy of attending in several parties during each semester as I did and get relaxed. Usually, Karaoke is one of the exciting entertainments during such parties, never lost it.

I really appreciate my academic supervisor, Professor Koji Tokimatsu, provided various opportunities for me to present my research activities, not only in weekly seminars, but also in other venues such as universities, and international conferences. The results of these opportunities were promotion of effective communication and collaboration with a network of peers. Participation and presentation at Energy Studies Institute (ESI) of National University of Singapore, Energy Research Institute of Nanyang Technology University of Singapore, and Industrial Technology Research Institute of Taiwan are some of the examples, come to mind. It was a good practice for me to improve my presentation skills as well as my self-confidence. One more thing, Professor Tokimatsu was not just my academic supervisor, he was always advised me in job hunting process, which is beyond of the tasks of an academic supervisor.

I had also chance to be a teaching assistance two times, which enabled me to consider my English language skills and examine my previous teaching experiences with students from different nationalities at TITECH. Last but not least, you will find yourself as much as freedom in conducting your desired research at Professor Tokimatsu lab.

この東京工業大学での博士課程での生活は、間違いなく私の修学してきた人生の中で最高のものでした。様々な東工大での関連講義の受講や、さまざまな技術的バックグラウンド・意見・考えの混ざる時松研での生活の中で、私はエネルギー分野の研究について自身の夢を探求するために尽力しました。技術経済学・社会経済学・環境的リスク分析といったものが本研究室の軸であり、エネルギーシステムの評価の統合を図っていました。

研究室のメンバーは、各々の指針の下、それぞれ独自の研究計画を定めていました。またメンバー同士のコミュニケーションは、各々の計画をまとめ上げて行く中で、より闊達に行われていました。私個人のコミュニケーションに関する経験は、社会学を交えたエネルギー経済学に携わった私の研究計画に反映されました。この共創の結果は研究室の指針である社会経済学に関する私の知識をより高め、これこそが私の最も輝かしい経験でした。このような研究に関わる科学的な議論と併せて、研究室もメンバーは毎学期のパーティに参加により親密になり、私自身も非常に楽しんでいました。また、このようなパーティにおけるカラオケは大変に良いエンターテインメントであり、欠かすことはありませんでした。

改めて、今日の私の研究活動を支える様々な機会や、毎週のセミナーのみならず学内外の研究会や学会などの場を用意していただくなど、指導教官の時松先生に感謝いたします。これらの機会を経て、同輩たちとの効果的なコミュニケーションや協同は一層促進されていました。思い返せば、シンガポール国立大学のエネルギー研究所、南洋理工大学（シンガポール）のエネルギー研究所、台湾の工業技術研究院などでの研究会への参加やプレゼンテーションなどは、大変に貴重な経験でした。これは、私にとってプレゼンテーション技術の研鑽や自信につながる、大変に価値ある機会でした。また、時松先生は単なる指導教官ではなく、その責務を超える私の就職活動においても常に助言をしてくださいました。

私は二度TAとして講義をサポートする機会があり、これは私の英語能力の見直しや、様々な国籍の東工大の学生と共に指導経験の探求につながりました。最後に、この時松研究室では、極めて自由闊達な環境の中で、各自追い求める研究に取り組める事と思います。

Tokimatsu sensei's response（教員からのコメント）

His first contact was on my birthday, November 2015. I know “Teheran” of his graduated university, that must be the top one in overall Iran, and his score was extremely high. Why he contacted with me? ... I understood his situations gradually after his enrollment, which cannot be disclosed here I had known as an academic supervisor. I suppose those who experienced in society have any similar experience. After something troubles in administrative procedure, he finally enrolled as a MEXT scholarship student in Sep 2016.

His performance had been extremely high even though he was in 30’s, from enrollment to graduation. His extremely high motivation and ambitions, speedy work, plan-do-see-action (PDCA) cycle, and his communication by “report-contacting-consulting (hourensou in Japanese, not spinach)”. In the beginning stage, he requested to discuss planning further months away and he surprised that when I said with panic “I cannot afford to serve you in any minute to discuss right now and talk you this matter later since lots of tasks are mounted over coming days now”. He was extremely excellent. It is too overstating but “nothing can be taught to you” in middle of the century Italy, however, challenges in the age are come across in any time and any place. He had suffered such severe difficulties even though he had all the way come to Japan. Similar to experiences through other students, I had flush backed my own experiences. I had recognized at that moment that I were besides of him. That was incredibly important role of academic supervisor for students. Actually that was at that timing I had made one of the largest roles as a supervisor. He had been in severe situation. We had step forward by “three legs by two”. Hard time for us. We altogether had overcome by his extreme efforts and never give-up mind sets as well as my own resourceful manner. Once he had overcome, he had been made successful breakthroughs afterwards. Sometime, the Lady Luck smiles to him. He had successfully one of students award (only him outside from the Western offshoots) in the IAEE 40th Singapore conference.

His final challenge was actually let his thesis had accepted. He aimed “earlier graduation by two year in Ph.D” in our new educational system. He must be the first person to complete this after the renewed system. It was, indeed, or unexpectedly, extraordinary difficult and challenges for us, since no processor exists and he was the exact front runner. But his genuine efforts and achievements let the “ultra-heavy” door open. It must be rewarding to his wife. The Lady Luck smiles those who paid efforts to the “last and final” drop like him. This implies me as opposite; mine is insufficient. My selling efforts such a genuine student across the world was indeed unsuccessful, meaning my power was insufficient. Now he is working in an innovative company engaging in his continuing Ph.D work. He must be blessed by the smiling Lady Luck. He is genuine honor, straight forward, modest, and the mirror of scholar. Such a genuine scholar exists. 

初めて彼から連絡を受けたのは、2015年11月の私の誕生日。テヘランという彼の出身地は勿論知っている。その名を冠する大学だから同国最高学府に違いない。しかも学業成績はとてつもなく優秀。何故、私に連絡を？・・・様々な事情は、彼が在籍した2年間でおいおい理解した。指導教員として知り得た、個別事情はここでは触れまい。社会人経験で誰にでもある。手続き面での紆余曲折を経て、2016年9月無事、文科省奨学生として入学した。

　彼は社会人経験者であり、30台半ばであったとはいえ、入学後から卒業まで、一言で言えば、全てにおいて凄かった。研究への情熱と大志、仕事のスピード、PDCAサイクルとホウレンソウ・・・。初期の頃は、何週間先までの案件を抱える私が、分刻みで今日明日明後日の案件処理せねばならないhecticな状況で、もっと先のことまで計画立案の時間が欲しいと彼に頼まれた時、「とてもじゃないが、目前の処理が溜まっているから、後回しにさせてくれ」と私がパニック状態で彼に言い、彼が驚いたことを思い出す。

大変おこがましいが、弟子に何も教えることはない、という中世イタリア時代の名言がよぎる。ところがそうではなかった。歳相応の難題は時空を超えて降りかかる。これも口外できない。私はまたしても自分の過去をフラッシュバックした（別学生別経験のように）。彼を通じて痛感した。私はこの時の彼のために居たのだと悟る。これも教員の重要な役割なのだ。

私が自分の経験を踏まえ、彼に指導教員として最大の役割を果たした１つは、この時だった。彼はとても辛い状況であった。ここは2人3脚で乗り切らねばならない。苦難であった。彼の頑張り粘りと私の機転で難局を突破した。それが突破口となり、その後の快進撃につながった。人生、時には幸運の女神も微笑むことがある。IAEE 40th Singapore大会で4人の学生ベストペーパーの（欧米以外唯一の）1人を受賞した。

最後の博士論文を通すことが、文字通り最後の難関となった。彼の履修するコースで初めての「2年で博士を卒業」。彼は本気でまっしぐらで目指した。本学教育改革後の最初の短縮博士修了学生であることは間違いない。これも「前例のない」ため難産であった。しかし、彼の猛烈な熱意による実績が、重い扉を開けた。彼の奥さんも報われたであろう。

彼のように振り絞る努力には、女神は微笑むこともあるが、微笑んで頂けない私は、まだまだ努力が足らないのかと思う。これだけの天下一品を売り込む世界営業行脚したが、販売員（指導教員）の力不足。本人の心底なる希望で現在の職へ。これだけ優秀な人を、天は見放すまい。愚直、直球勝負、実力があるゆえの謙遜。学究者の鏡、この世にまだ健在なり。
